I have been collecting 'flown' medallions now for over a year and have put together a very nice collection. I also have put together a list a comprehensive list the flown medals from the research I did.

I got most of the info this site and several other space medal sites. I thought I share this list with you all and hopefully pick up some of the missing information I still need.

I divided these up into seven categories. The first two are Fliteline and Robbins which I am not listing as I can't afford them unless I hit the lotto or someone donates them to me. Here are the lists. Also I am providing links to pictures of my collection and the lists.

That's a lovely collection and so well presented... and you've only been at it just over a year! Incredible.

I've only just started out. Where do you find these coins? Surely they can't just all be from eBay?

You would be surprised at how many of these can be found on eBay. The harder to find ones sometimes show up on eBay also maybe 3 or 4 per year. Asking here on this site is also a good way to find some. Other 'legit' auctions such as Heritage, Regency, RR etc.

I've seen photos of the Apollo 11 MFA medallion in which it has a silver and in others a goldish appearance. Were two types made?

To my understanding, NASA's Manned Flight Awareness Office had some quantity of the original minted Apollo 11 medals plated in gold for the second anniversary of the moon landing.

There were 200000 of the Apollo 11 MFA's from what I gathered. Its unknown how many gold plated versions were minted. Though you should be careful as I have seen some of the 'silver' versions that have a gold tint to them (toning?) but are not the same as the gold plated (as far as I know).

Unless someone has information to the contrary, I don't think any gold-plated Apollo 11 medals were "minted." I think the plated medals were a subset of the 200,000 that were plated after the fact.

I have made updates to my list. I am also in the process of putting these into Word documents with pictures and additional information. Currently only have the MFA/SFAs and Russian medals completed.

Someday I would like to make a website with all this but that is way off in the future.

Also, if you know of any of the data I missing please let me know.

Send me an email and I will send you a copy.

Here are some totals:

  • MFA/SFA (15 Melted-Metal)
  • Flown (84 Total)
    • 78 Melted-Metal and 6 Whole-Medal
    • 46 Melted-Medal, one set (20 medals), 6 Frame Sets, 3 Seals, 3 Pins, 6 Whole-Medal
  • Historical/Launch (39 Total)
    • 38 Melted-Metal and 1 Whole-Metal)
    • 14 Medals, 4 Sets (23 medals), 1 Pin, 1 Whole-Metal
  • Russian (40 total)
    • 31 Melted-Metal and 8 Whole-Metal and 1 Unflown Silver)
    • 19 Melted-Medals, 4 Sets (13 flown/1 silver unflown medals), 8 Whole-Metal
  • Space Medal Covers (29 Melted-Metal)

Some more updates. I had to make some additions thanks to several fellow collectors. I also completed another word doc for the Historical/Launch medals. So if interested let me know.

I also updated my pictures. I have been using scans of the reverse side for those I don't have. Some look pretty good but others kind of lame. But hopefully some day I will replace them with the real thing. So if you have one I need don't hesitate to contact me.

Well, with 2013 now complete its time for an update.

There were six new medallions and two new frame sets in 2013. I also discovered some more previously released medals. I have the current list available for those who may want it.

I also have categorized these differently. Now as most of you know melted-metal medals are those made by mixing a piece of an item that had been flown or used in the launch or building of (historical) with other alloys. There are also whole-medal medallions which of course were completely flown. And then there is a third sort of in between. These are medallions made with no flown/historical metal and then had a piece of flown metal embedded onto the medal. These I am classifying under melted-metal.

I am separating the whole-medal medallions (pins and seals) because there are so many that we may never really know about. These are generally flown in the astronauts PPKs and we only find out about them when someone puts one up for auction. There are probably hundreds of these. I am only going to list those that are well known (excluding Fliteline and Robbins) such as the Apollo 13 and Apollo 14 medals from the Franklin Mint and ones I own.

I believe I now have a pretty good idea of how many melted-metal medallions there are (excluding those that will be made in 2014 and beyond). Of course there still can be some I have not heard of yet. But here is my latest tally.

  • Melted-Metal - 200 (192 medals, 4 pins and 4 embedded)
    (192 = 15 MFA/SFA + 71 Flown + 45 Historical + 32 Russian + 29 FDC)

  • Whole-Medal - 29 (22 medals + 2 pins + 5 seals)
    (22 = 6 Flown + 2 Historical + 14 Russian)
Also there are four medals, where they are said to be flown or made with flown metal that I have not verified if they actually were (have not seen a COA to verify).

I found a a presentation box and the name on it "rang a bell," MRI Labs. I don't remember where or when I got the box so I opened it up and found a paper from Alcoa dated Jan. 19, 1970. So now I have a date and manufacturer of the Alcoa Apollo 8 medallions. Thought you might enjoy this.

On eBay (222177574797) is a 20th anniversary ASTP medallion which includes metal flown on Atlantis. Assumption is that it's STS-71, though it doesn't say.

The only one that I am aware of with Orion metal would be the NASA Constellation Medallion.

Yes, thank you... I have that one.

Was looking for a medallion from the December 2014 Orion/Delta 4 mission.
