I want to buy a book about the exploration of the outer planets by Voyagers 1 and 2. Can anyone recommend a "definitive" book covering Voyager from conception, planning, construction and launch through all of the encounters and up to (at least) the "pale blue dot" series of images.I am aware of one Springer book, "NASA's Voyager Missions" (I think) but I have seen warnings that the "print on demand" version is to be avoided because of very poor photographs. If I buy it from Springer direct, will I get properly printed photographs? By the way, I have many fine books on the exploration of the planets, including Jay Gallentine's "Ambassadors From Earth" but I want a book exclusively about Voyager. |

I just yesterday bought (but haven't read) Voyager's Grand Tour by HC Dethloff and RA Schorn, which while older had better general reviews that the larger Voyager by Stephen Pyne (erratic span of reviews).There is apparently a Voyager eBook coming out in July although I presume you're going to Spacefest to meet some of the 'Voyagers' from JPL? n.b. the reviews were by general public feedback... |

I've got a book called "Distant Encounters" by Mark Washburn. Haven't read it in quite a few years, but I recall it being fairly good. The drawback in terms of what you're looking for is that is was published in 1983, and therefore only covers the Jupiter and Saturn encounters — nothing from Uranus or Neptune or the ongoing mission (including the "family portrait" series of photos). |

There are two beautiful books covering the Jupiter and Saturn flybys (nothing beyond that) with plenty of colour photos on glossy paper. The first one is NASA SP-439 "Voyage to Jupiter" from 1980 and the second one is NASA SP-451 "Voyages to Saturn" from 1981. They both cover all you are looking for pretty well up to Saturn. |

Thanks to all - I have SP-439 and SP-451, but "Voyager's Grand Tour" seems to be exactly what I wanted. |

If you buy from Springer, you should receive a pukka copy with the colour plates. Some people have received POD in which the plates are done in black-and-white. It is difficult to tell in advance what you'll get. This problem isn't peculiar to this book. It is commonplace with POD. Just a sad fact of life. I believe that amazon have the right to print books released by real publishers, and have a habit of doing them in black-and-white.
