The makers and distributors of the award-winning documentary on the life of Christa McAuliffe (Reach for the Stars) have just released a new DVD called "Pam Melroy: Countdown to Commander".

It is now available from Traipsing Thru Films for $14.95 plus $3.95 S+H. You'll also find details on there for the McAuliffe DVD.

I have not had a chance to view this 39-minute documentary on Pam Melroy as yet, but a review copy is on its way to me now and I will give more comprehensive details of its contents as soon as possible.

I believe they are multi-regional, but I'm only basing that on the McAuliffe DVD I received a few years back. There is a contact option at that website, so perhaps you could check if it is compatible with the system used in Belgium. I won't know if the DVD plays in the Australia format until I receive my review copy next week.

I've now received my review copy of this DVD, and to answer the first question: yes, it is multi-regional, so presumably it can be played in any country.

This is a wonderful and very up-to-date story of a Discovery shuttle crew under the command of Pam Melroy and their STS-120 visit to the International Space Station in October 2007. I liked this presentation a great deal as Pam is not only very articulate in expressing her joy and wonderment at being an astronaut, but you also discover through her words and footage a whole new side of commanding a very complex shuttle mission. Some of the mission images and footage are very revealing and extraordinarily beautiful, and of course we get to see the interior of the ISS as it was just a few months ago. In fact in one of the DVD's extras we are taken on a "glided" tour from the pilot's seat right through into the ISS and we explore the different modules and workplaces.

At 39 minutes the main feature is about the same length as an IMAX presentation, but I tend to think that the object was to produce a DVD that could be shown to a classroom of students in which most facets of a shuttle mission to the space station are shown in easy-to-follow sequence. Plus of course the one-on-one interviews with Pambo are quite wonderful and down-to-earth, which would certainly inspire any students - particularly those young women who might want to follow in her footsteps. It truly shows that anyone can become an astronaut, and even command shuttle missions. I should point out that this is not a DVD about Pam's life - it is for the most part about the STS-120 mission aboard Discovery, but stunning enough to hold the interest of people of all ages and interests.

The extras in the DVD are not all that long, but are a nice and at times fun bonus to the entire presentation. The editing is very good, the picture clarity is excellent, and the content for any space enthusiast is extremely interesting and reasonably current. I would certainly highly recommend this DVD to anyone.

Traipsing Thru Films are an extremely efficient organisation.

I received my copy of Astronaut Pam here in the U.K. just four days after making my Paypal payment.

It is well worth the money and I agree with everything Colin has said about it.

I just ordered a copy of the Pam Melroy DVD. Can't wait to get my copy!

Randy

I received my copy yesterday and have just finished watching it. I echo what Colin said. It's very well done and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a "behind the scenes" look at shuttle missions and the astronauts who fly them.
