Anyone read Seitzen/Cowing Apogee book by this title?Is the DVD any good (all regions?) What images? What chapters like? Is it mainly about the 'policy decisions' leading to the Busjh Initiative? Phill

The DVD features four things: Bush's NASA speech, O'Keefe's press conference, Vice President Cheney's visit to JPL, and some space animations. I believe that this is a DVD-R. It has only a top menu, no chapter selections in the individual clips.I watched a bit of the Cheney section and all of the animations. The picture was not top-quality. The animations are really cool. They include animations of an asteroid rendezvous craft, and lunar and Mars operations and robotic operations. There is a long segment on a Mars mission. The animations were all produced by Frassanito Associates, if you happen to be familiar with their work. Not totally realistic-looking, nor the latest in computer animation, but still pretty nice. I have only two complaints about the DVD, one minor and one more major. The minor one is that there is absolutely no context for the animations. They don't tell you why these were produced or often what they are showing. For instance, I don't know about any active NASA studies of human missions to asteroids, although that stuff was discussed during Project NEXT. So maybe this came out of that work, but we just don't know. Also, they show Mars training in an earth-based training facility, but there is no explanation of this either. The bigger problem is the video transfer. All the images are slightly blurred. Not the sharpest quality that you get from good DVD transfers and in fact not even as sharp as a first generation VHS tape. After awhile this can give you a headache. But still cool. | |
