I recently discovered that there are astronaut portraits of the Mercury 7 astronauts from 1959. They are designated as L-59-XXXX.

Check Chris Spain's Astronaut Portraits website and you will see one of Alan Shepard.

I was fortunate to have acquired a NASA numbered Scott Carpenter 1959 portrait but I have never seen any of the other five.

Anyone out there have any 1959 portraits of Grissom, Glenn, Cooper, Schirra, or Slayton?

Yeah, Deke has had the same "hair evolution" that Hank Hartsfield had!

I guess a lot of these hardboiled guys let their hair down (out) in the 70s/80s/90s. Except for Kranz... and Musgrave...

In looking at Chris's website, I noticed a couple of Group 2, the "Gemini" 9 astronauts. I was wondering if anyone had a copy of either of the 1962 pictures showing just the nine.

Kranz's hair seems to have really upset Harrison Schmitt in that photo!

LOL! Yeah, I'd seen that photo before but had forgotten about it until now...I guess for Deke's generation that's what passed for "letting your hair down" in the late 70s-early 80s.

I also get a kick out of looking at crew portraits from the same era and how it seems like every male astronaut from the TFNG class into the mid-80s rocked a moustache...then I remember that the Hollywood archetypes of American maledom then were Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck. Poor Pinky Nelson...I'm not sure he could have grown one if he'd wanted to.

Men wearing suede sportcoats and bolo ties should probably reserve judgement on others' personal aesthetic choices. Just sayin'.
