If you could afford to get only one of these signed, which would you choose??

1) John Young Apollo 16 WSS NASA Litho

2) John Young Apollo 16 Jumping on Moon Litho

3) Apollo 10 NASA litho already signed by the 2 other crew (Stafford, Cernan)

4) Apollo 16 launch cover already signed by the 2 other crew (Mattingly, Duke)

What do you think?

I'd agree with that.
BUT what if you've got the Moonwalker print already signed by 10? Worth getting Young to sign?
IMHO it's not particularly attractive, but the only piece I'm likely to get 11 moonwalkers on.

As one of your local bobbies I'll have to say that any bank jobs should be done out of the county...unless I'm on overtime!

I would have him sign my 11 x 14 "Earth Rise" photo currently signed exculsively by other moonwalkers.

I think I would go for the Apollo 10 crew as well, David.

Im toying with the idea of having my Gemini spacesuit litho signed, as Im sure there will be loads of WSS and Jumpin John's being sent in.

I actually prefer the other shots of JY on the moon http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/a16/as16-114-18388.jpg and http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/a16/as16-117-18825.jpg

but I can only afford to have one signed, what do others think ?

I've got a mint Snoopy Astronaut doll with box signed by Cernan and Stafford. I am struggling with whether I should send it or not. It certainly would be something "different". Any thoughts?

It's all a metter of personal taste of course, but I never liked #5 much (looks like he's doing a bunny-rabbit impersonation). I'd drop 1 & 3 - why take a training shot when he made it to the moon? #2 is not bad, 4 & 6 pretty good. 8 is one my faves. And #7 of course is a classic image...

Anyway, I've got to get back to whittling down my own set of photos!

Adam,

How could this one fail to make the short-list?

Just a great picture.

If I were to send something for John Young, I think I would have to choose... a corned beef sandwich.

Either that, or a bottle of orange juice.

Matt, true its a great picture. But it reminds me too much of another image from the Apollo 12 mission.

I can only afford one image to get signed so I'd want something real special. I may crop something in an unusual way to get what I want.

I have nearly ruled out any portraits as I have two recent ones from JY and I think an action shot would add nicely to my collection.

Hi Adam,

If I could have only one surface image signed by Young it would have to be the jumping salute.

I don't care if it something of a cliche. I don't care if every man and his dog has the same signed picture.

I remember the buzz it gave this particular spotty youth when I first saw it as a litho freshly rammed through my letter box all those years ago. It gives me the same buzz to this day.................... No contest as far as I am concerned.

Regards,

Rick.

I'd do a Photoshop version of a Mission 61J crew photo and send that to him... Can you imagine the look on his face? "Waitaminnit, we never issued this, no wait, we never had a crew photo!"

I truly believe that Kim could drive to the poor house if I had the chance. :-) I have been looking at his website for 6 months contemplating the signed Bonestell "Exploration of Mars" print. Now, for the same price, John Young. As much as I would like a lunar photo of John Young saluting the flag, the combination of a Young autograph on the Bonestell print would be a fascinating combination and a great base for other Moonwalkers. Most of them would have known his work before the start of their careers.
I wonder if Kim might negotiate a bit?

While a complete A-10 is enticing, I'd opt for the classic A-16 Moon Jump.
Ed, I have the same thoughts too. I have a 16 X 20 full Moon poster with an autograph of one Moonwalker from each Apollo lunar landing, (Aldrin, Bean, Mitchell, Scott, Duke & Cernan). Getting Armstrong to sign it is only a dream, so I thought I may just keep it the way it is with one autograph per mission. That being said, had I known Young would be signing I might have sent it in for Schmitt to sign too, leaving only Armstrong's to 'obtain'.
That's all history now and, besides, I REALLY hated the thought of sending that poster 3/4 way across the country and back! Sure, I could insure it, but I could never really ever be compensated if it were lost in transit.
Adam, you have quite a dilemma! I like 2, 7 & 8.
Many of you know I've been collecting autographs in my copy of Lattimer's book 'All We Did Was Fly To The Moon'. My goal is to get at least one signature on each mission page. Since Gus is no longer with us here I'll definitely be getting the Molly Brown page signed, a page I really thought would never get signed.
...And if the Money Fairy comes 'round my way soon, I'll probably get the G-10 page completed too!

I'm going to get the jumping salute 8x10. My problem is should I get it signed in black below his feet or signed in silver on the black sky above him. What does everybody think?

I would consider getting it signed in silver in the black sky. Because of the texture of the soil below Young in the jumping picture, some of the signatures I have seen there are relatively hard to see. I had Schmitt sign in silver on a black sky and it looks great.

Adam, If I could afford the signing and I had the choice of the pics you indicated I'd go for pic number 6. Much nicer than pic number 4 because of the way it has been cropped.

Were there two different NASA official Apollo WSS portraits, one for Apollo 10 and one for Apollo 16 or is the one we always see his Apollo 16 portrait? I'm going to send in his Apollo WSS and wanted to know what to have inscribed under his signature.
Any help?

I usually look for that special "Signature" image, the one that says "Apollo 16!" or "Typically John Young!" I have the Glenn siver suit image, GT6/7 rendezvous image, Aldrin Visor shot, and the Leonov and McCandless EVA images to name a few. I want a representative view of the space program, so this is were I start first. If I was able to pay the $495, I probably would go with the Apollo 16 Moon Jump. I guess it depends on what type of collection you want or if you're looking at investment value. if you're paying that much I won't want a shortened, scribbled autograph even though it completes a particular series.

Wow, Robert doesn't miss a beat. With today being the anniversary of the famous corned beef sandwich, wouldn't it be funny if we all sent a sandwich(or facsimilie) to the signing?

Hello Paul,
So you think the Moonwalker print is not attractive. What dont you like about this print? I am sure you will find it attractive if Neil Armstrong ever signs it. I would like to take a survey and find out which print is everybodys favorite. Believe it or not.....this is my favorite print.

Mike, the 'Moonwalker' print is also amoung my fav. Especially since mine was also signed by Scott, through Novaspace. Having 11 of 12 is great with Young signature, it will be at best a wonderful opportunity for my collection or, at worst if I ever need to sell it one day, a fabulous investment.

I can see myself getting a Moonwalker print sometime after the re-release...

...as for this signing... I am leaning toward adding Young to my Reaching for the Stars print.

My collection has a litho I use to get autographs of test pilots. All of those are in person and free. It never made sense to me to pay astros to sign that because I am so far behind the curve on that one.

Now Reaching for the Stars can be my touchstone for all of the astro signatures. It comes well stocked with 24 sigs out of the box. I have added Dave Scott and Harrison Schmitt to it, and adding John Young will now give it representation of every manned US flight from Mercury to ASTP except for Liberty Bell 7. That will be a keeper for me.

Mike,
I find it garish and somewhat dated. I especially don't like the "Moonwalkers" wording splashed across the middle which IMHO makes it look more like a sports team poster. The images of the astronauts are on the other hand very true to life. Having Armstrong on it would not make me appreciate it any more, since I don't see the addition of one signature making the ARTWORK any more attractive.
It is, however, the only item I'm ever likely to get 11 moonwalkers signatures on, so for that I am grateful.
My favourite: "Kissing the Earth".

I have decide to go with pic number 6 for my signed image, I have had it printed on Fuji Crystal matt paper and it looks great.

I would have liked it to have been personalized but I can;t justify spending that much on a personalized image. I know it doesn't cost any more but it affects the resale value. I have never had to sell anything yet but you never know when a family ememrgency may make it neccessary to thin out a collection.

To get back to the original thread... I have been doing similar soul searching myself. Based on your choices, and this is just my humble opinion based on my circumstances... (Circumstances are that I have a John Young sig on the standard models litho) this is what I would choose. (Also note, I have the occasional cover here and there, but I strongly prefer pictures, again personal choice.)

1) Apollo 10 NASA litho already signed by the 2 other crew (Stafford, Cernan)

2) John Young Apollo 16 WSS NASA Litho

3) John Young Apollo 16 Jumping on Moon Litho

4) Apollo 16 launch cover already signed by the 2 other crew (Mattingly, Duke)

I was emailing a friend off-line today. In a way, I have been getting ready for this day for a few years stocking up key lithos etc...

1) Reaching for the Stars (explained earlier)
2) Apollo 16 crew litho signed by Charlie and TK
3) Apollo 10 crew litho signed by Tom and Gene
4) WSS litho or glossy
5) Jumping Flag salute litho

The key now is rationing the funds to fill one or two needs. (My 2 Apollo crew lithos are pristine and cry out for JY.)

Having a key Mattingly sig on that Apollo 16 litho is the crux... that isn't easy to come by. I got the Apollo 10 crew litho set up at Burbank this past Fall. Rather than wait for their unknown completion future I just stuck them on my website as is at the time, cuz they are sooooo clean....

I still toss and turn at night trying to figure out what to do...

This is something that's a real shame in the space collecting world. Here we have a chance to get something signed for ourselves personally by a living legend... and it's a real dilemma whether to get it personalized or not.

We all know that unpersonalized stuff sells for more, and like Adam you have to bear in mind the possibility that you might need to sell a picture down the line.

In reality maybe the personalization option shouldn't just be free, it should be cheaper. Let's say $395 instead of $495, something like that.

To be honest, given Young's signing tendency through the years, I was surprised (even disappointed) that there was no stipulation that some or all of the items had to be personalized.

Anyway, I decided a while back that even if it does make all my stuff worthless in the future, I now only collect personalized WSS shots where possible. I don't want a lot of anonymous photos, I want something that relates to me and the fact that I got the autographs from these people (albeit indirectly).

I like personalized also, but mainly because it helps with the authentication. Also, the reduced price for personalization you refer to is not unheard of. Some celebrities do that.

I'm only a fan of personalization when there is a story behind it. Like when I have a meaningful enounter with someone.

But just having them inscribe it via the mail/signing doesn't get me going. For me it has to have that personal encounter to go along with it.

While I would have liked to have had a personalized lunar image from JY, I can live without it knowing that JY has already taken the time in the past to sign and personalize 4 pictures for me, all without payment.

Any one of those signatures means more to me than any one paid for signature, even if they are on less desirable images.

Can anyone tell me what Young is getting to sign a Moonwalkers print? Just wondering. I think it would be worth it to get him on that as I imagine Armstrong will probably do a signing one of these days.

The fee for a Moonwalkers print or an Alan Bean print is $595 according to the Novaspace information sheet.

By the way, I plan to send the Apollo 10 litho for a crew completion and also a WSS unpersonalized (there goes my budget for the rest of the year!)

While thumbing through Sy Liebergot's book, APOLLO EECOM, I came upon his short chapter on Apollo 16 that has an infamous quote from the transcripts. It got me wondering if John Young would get a chuckle if somebody sent in a bottle of potasium supplements to sign. Thanks Sy for including that incident in your book. Gave me the giggles for about a day. "Biological impertinence" Ha! Gotta remember that one!
