collectSPACE Christie's to auction Omega Speedmaster watches flown in space and to the moonFour decades after it journeyed a quarter of a million miles out into space, a watch used by the last astronaut to orbit the moon alone is set to be sold at an auction dedicated to the make, model and history of the well-traveled timepiece. On Dec. 15, during the 43rd anniversary of NASA's Apollo 17 mission, Christie's will open up bidding on more than 50 Omega Speedmaster chronographs, including a watch that flew along with command module pilot Ron Evans as part of an onboard experiment. The auction, to be held at Christie's New York gallery, will also feature a Speedmaster that flew for a full year aboard the Russian space station Mir and the gold chronograph that Omega gifted Evans after his historic mission. |

Thanks Eric! It was really quite amazing to see Evans' Omega Speedmaster up close while you were here in Houston.I'll also add that the catalog you put together is a fantastic reference guide to the Omega Speedmaster's history, in so much that even if readers aren't planning to bid, they might enjoy downloading the PDF or ordering a printed copy. |

Thanks for the update on the auction. I'm glad the astronaut and mission related pieces did so well. I thought the Apollo/Soyuz 1975 LE would have finished a bit stronger being such a rare piece. |

collectSPACE Christie's sells flown-to-the-moon Omega Speedmaster watch for $245KA watch that was flown to the moon, of the same make and model as the watches NASA issued to all of its Apollo astronauts to wear while in space, was sold by Christie's on Tuesday (Dec. 16) for nearly a quarter of a million dollars to the watchmaker's own museum. The Speedmaster chronograph, which was mounted to an experiment before it became an astronaut's memento, sold for $245,000 to the Omega Museum in Switzerland. "Apollo 17 astronaut Ron Evans' Omega has been sold to Omega Museum!" Omega announced on its social media accounts. "As expected for a timepiece worn on the moon (sic), it fetched the highest price ever for a Speedmaster at an Omega-themed auction at Christie's in New York." |
