As I write this, Tracy Caldwell Dyson and Doug Wheelock are working successfully to effect the coolant pump changeover.They seem to be having fun. A woman laughing while working on an EVA has an heavenly feeling to it, somehow... I want one of those EVA tool boxes! |

With two spacewalkers at work individually at times, isn't there a need for two loops, i.e. two capcoms, etc? |

In practice, no. The two spacewalkers can hear each other (obviously) so they can coordinate their own calls to the ground so as not to overlap each other (though that sometimes happens), and the ground can easily refer their replies to the intended astronaut by using their name. |

In preparations for this series of spacewalks, several NASA astronauts recently rehearsed some of the techniques underwater at JSC.Among them were Rick Sturckow and Robert Satcher. Sturckow is a veteran shuttle commander whose also been seen as a Capcom in the station flight control room. Is he (as well as Satcher) training for a future long-duration ISS mission? |

I find it interesting that Rick Sturckow is training for EVAs... as a former shuttle commander he could perhaps get the chance to not only command a shuttle mission, but also perform a spacewalk. Has this ever happened before in the US space program? |

Yes, Frank Culbertson commanded STS-51 and then performed a spacewalk during Expedition 3. Likewise, Ken Bowersox commanded STS-61 and STS-73 before performing two spacewalks during Expedition 6. Looking forward, Scott Kelly commanded STS-118 and, although he his not presently scheduled to perform a spacewalk while aboard the station, he is trained to do so if a problem arises. |

I believe Satcher was unsure whether or not he would go to Star City - the next flight opportunity wouldn't come until 2014 or 2015 at the earliest (with some ISS expedition crews already named) and as well, he has two children. |
