Screen Crush reports that "Beyond Apollo," a big screen adaptation of Barry N. Malzberg's 1972 sci-fi novel, officially secured funding at the Cannes Film Festival, where "Cloverfield" and "Let Me In" director Matt Reeves signed on as an executive producer. The adaptation is the passion project of music video director Michael Grodner, who had been trying to get the film off the ground for years. The film's extremely cool website, which has been online for years as part of Grodner's attempt to raise funding... The website offers the following synopsis of the book-turned-movie: The first two-man mission to Venus is aborted in mid-flight and abruptly returns back to Earth. When rescue crews go to retrieve the space capsule, they make a startling discovery: The Captain is missing there is no sign of his body whatsoever - and strangely enough, the lone surviving astronaut has no clue about what took place. Beyond Apollo tells the riveting story of when that astronaut, Harry Evans, returns to earth and must answer to the authorities about what really happened on board the doomed flight to Venus. His mind-bending struggle to figure that out is a harrowing journey through the possibilities: Was the Captain murdered? Did he commit suicide? Or were alien beings responsible for his demise? The answer, as Evans will eventually discover, is far more terrifying than anything he could possibly imagine. Based on the award winning book by Barry N. Malzberg, Beyond Apollo captures the eerie isolation of delving into the unknown, begs us to ask the unanswerable, and marks the separation between the real, unreal and surreal.

I read "Beyond Apollo" when it first appeared. I remember thinking it was a good novel, but not a great one. I think I'll re-read it. |

Bill Pullman? Ugh....after his sappy portrayal of the President in Independence Day, this choice really turns me off. Guess they don't have much budget. |

This is a review of the book "Beyond Apollo." Liking or not liking a book may be personal, but I did not understand this book at all.There are multiple conflicting story lines in the book. Some of the simpler ones: - humans went to Venus
- humans did not go to Venus
- Venus is inhabited
- Venus is not inhabited
Also, the plot(s) of the book follow the laws of physics at some points, but disregard them when useful to a character or action. There are a great many graphic sex scenes throughout the book, apparently gratuitous to the plot as these are never resolved or explained. I think these scenes are not acceptable to the under-20 crowd.Finally we have declarations like "the universe was founded after World War II" which are simply impossible for me to fathom. The book attempts to combine science fiction, murder-mystery and philosophy genres but the result is, in my opinion, muddled, hard to follow and just plain frustrating as you attempt to make sense of the plots outlined in the book.
