In America, this is the annual weekend in which we honor and give thanks to those who have served and sacrificed in the cause of freedom. That we should enjoy liberty is not a given, it is not historically inevitable, nor is it our birthright. It must be fought for and preserved, generation after generation, by citizens of strength and honor. If you're an American who knows such a person, and if you're one of our Canadian or overseas friends who does, please take a moment to thank them. And then take another moment to honor the memory of those you can no longer thank personally. . |

In memory of my uncle (1910-1943), a Coast Guardsman who was aboard the USS Escanaba when it exploded in the North Atlantic during World War II. I never knew him, but he was one of the 292,138 brave American military men who died during battle during World War II. |

Memorial Day Message from the ISSNASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Don Pettit remember the Americans who have served in the U.S. military. Joe Acaba: Greetings from the International Space Station. I'm NASA astronaut Joe Acaba, former U.S. Marine Corps, along with my crewmate Don Pettit. Memorial Day is a special time to honor those who have bravely served in the military and sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom. Don Pettit: We pause on International Space Station to remember the service of all these men and women. Acaba: NASA is in the business of exploration and here on the International Space Station, we are working to advance the cause of exploration to benefit everyone on Earth. But spaceflight is a risky business, most worthwhile things are. We remember those in the NASA family who have lost their lives and we thank them and their families for their extraordinary sacrifice. Pettit: To all our verterans we owe you our deepest grattitude and our highest honor. We are grateful for the service that you have made. |
