Sky News is reporting a kid on his way to school was hit by a meterorite. Don't doubt this event actually occurred but it seems implausible that after striking the boy and minimally injuring him, the rock subsequently left a foot long crater in the tarmac... Either the story is embellished or the order of impact may be recollected incorrectly (i.e. meteorite struck the ground first and fragment(s) of ejecta collaterally impacted Master Gerrit Blank). ------------------ Scott Schneeweis http://www.SPACEAHOLIC.com/ |

According to a SPACE.com article on the topic a few years, back: - November 30, 1954 - Alabama housewife awakened when a 3 pound meteorite crashed through her house and severely bruised her hip.
- October 9, 1992 - Peekskill, NY a piece from a large fireball hit an unoccupied Chevy.
- June 21, 1994 - a Spaniard was driving when a 3 pound meteorite crashed through his windshield, bent the steering wheel before resting in the back seat.

The October 1992 incident was caught on tape by several different angles, and what remains of it is now in and on display at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, along with the videos of the entry. It happened to be a Friday night, so many people had their video cameras at high school football games and caught it on tape |

The Peekskill video footage shows the fireball in the air rather than the car being struck. You can see many clips here. |

Here is a picture of me with the piece of the Peekskill Meteorite in the American Museum Of Natural History Museum in New York. The Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites at the museum is one of the best I have ever seen. |

As a professional meteoricist, I have to say that I dismissed the story almost immediately: the consensus over here is that the account just doesn't ring true at all! Who knows: the stone (if it is a meteorite!) may have originated on eBay: a genuine 'hammer' would be worth hundreds of dollars... |
