Hi All,
Just got back from John Young's talk in Edinburgh. He was very witty and informal, talking for about an hour and using slides on a large screen to illustrate his points. He talked at length about his Apollo 16 experiences and his Shuttle flights (no mention of Gemini) before moving on to NASA's plans for future manned exploration of space. He made particular reference to the role of space exploration as our only ultimate chance of extending the lifespan of our species beyong the next major volcanic or meteor impact event. He got plenty of laughs with his ironic comments and the hour really shot past. He answered a few questions at the end from the audience (about 300 people by the way); in answer to a query about the chances of a book he seemed doubtful, citing the amount of report writing his work already requires.I originally came across collectSPACE when I was scouring the internet for a site with any reference to a public talk by a moonwalker; tonight I finally attended one and I had a great night. If you get the chance to hear John Young talk it's got to be about the best thing you could do with an evening.
Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, no I don't think he signed anything. Didn't matter at all. P.S. Young's Edinburgh talk was part of an on-going series, many of them with a space theme. I think maybe a lot of people will be very interested in the talk scheduled for Jan 22nd 2002. Quoting from the brochure -
"Reinhold Ewald will describe how his career as a scientist led to him becoming an astronaut, and will tell us about life on board the Mir Space Station. Mission dates permitting, this lecture will include a live link to the International Space Station, 250 miles above the Earth, giving members of the audience the chance to talk to the astronauts on board. Yep - I've been there too, together with a friend, having all stories confirmed that he would NEVER EVER sign in person. 
But I enjoyed his speech - very witty and interesting. And yes, I got the catalogue from there as well. For those in the area and interested, the next astronaut appearing there will be Bonnie Dunbar, on Dec 6th, at 7 pm. And of course Reinhold Ewald, as Matt already mentioned.
