Does anyone have a definitive figure for the total number of complete F-1 engines produced? I'd like to include R&D/test articles as well as flown and unflown engines.

According to Alan Lawrie's "Saturn" (page 143):
In total, Rocketdyne manufactured and delivered 98 production F-1 engines. A breakdown of the engine disposition is as follows:
  • 65 engines were launched on S-IC stages
  • 10 engines are on flight stages not launched
  • 16 engines are either in storage or on display in a museum
  • 2 engines are on the S-IC-D museum stage
  • 2 engines are on the S-IC-T museum stage
  • 3 engines were scrapped or consumed
In addition, there were 2 engines (F-3T1 and F-4T2) that were manufactured by NASA as a learning exercise using spare parts. These engines are on the S-IC-T museum stage. Finally, there are 7 serialized mock-ups. Three of these engines are on the S-IC-D museum stage, one is on the S-IC-T museum stage, one was consumed and the other two are on display/in storage.

I don't know if a "definitive" list of engines was ever compiled or still exists (much less located where someone like us could find it!), but I just created a page on my website which contains a list of F-1 engine serial numbers courtesy of Bob Biggs, a Rocketdyne engineer who worked on F-1.

The second edition of Lawrie's Saturn contains an appendix (to which I contributed) detailing all of the surviving F-1s and containing information on some of the test articles.

The book also lists every engine which was ever installed in an S-IC stage and which ones flew.

Thanks for the info! From the sources I reviewed, I was coming up with various numbers around 100, but nothing for sure.

All times are CT (US)
