Can someone give me a definitive answer as to why the fenders on the Apollo lunar roving vehicle are grey when delivered to Kennedy Space Center, and are then orange in color by the time the vehicle is loaded aboard the lunar module? Was there some sort of protective coating on the fenders during shipment, or were they painted at KSC during processing? |

Possibly the fenders attached during delivery are not flight items. |

There is a red sign taped to the grey LRV fender in photo KSC-71PC-314. I can't make out what the sign says, but maybe it is a clue.It says "non operational hardware" on the red tags. Photo KSC-72P-202 shows the Apollo 17 LRV arriving (folded up) at KSC with dark fenders, and a flag can be seen on one fender. |

Not actually a grey color more of a green/gray which is the typical cured "aerospace grade" fiberglass cloth layup.It would be interesting to know if this a fit check process and then those parts were finished or these were just samples for fit and the flight version were still in process for installation. So, if these are not now on the lunar surface were did they end up and how can I add one to the Kollection.  |
