Topic: Mercury Astronauts vis a vis Ground Control where did I read this?

Somewhere in my readings of many memoirs I've got a recollection of reading about an incident which happened early in Project Mercury.As I recall it involved a conflict about the role to be played by on-the-ground astronauts in flight control. It happened in relation to or at one of the ground tracking stations, not the Cape. One of the astronauts had a confrontation with Kraft about how much the astronauts would be involved. I think that the location was Hawaii, and the the astronaut was Al Shepard, although either or both could be wrong. Does anyone else remember this and where I might have read it? |

The incident that immediately comes to mind (though this may be a different one than the one you are referring to) is Slayton and Kraft facing off in early 1965 over a dispute between Conrad and a flight controller in Carnarvon about who was in charge. Shepard did get into an argument with a flight controller at a party about the incident too.It's covered in Kranz's book, possibly elsewhere too. |

My memory is that both Kranz and Kraft discussed the incident in their autobiographies. And John Llewellyn would have been the flight controller at the party--he wound up shouting "I've got more Purple Hearts than you'll ever see in your life, you SOB!" but was wrestled away from the astronaut in question before things got physical. |

I found the passage in Kranz's book, and yes, I'm pretty sure that that's the one I was thinking of. For some reason I had it happening during Mercury. Thanks! |
