This photo has been on eBay for a few months, and I'm curious about it. It's a very well-done composite image, I think, almost as slick as one done with modern digital software... but to what end? What is that spacecraft? The photo doesn't have NASA markings or anything indicating a date, but it is printed on the "A KODAK PAPER" they used for top-quality prints before the mid-1970s. (The seller says it is "defiantly vintage" - "I'm over 40 years old, dang it!") Anyone have any ideas? |

That appears to be the General Dynamics/Convair B9U booster with the North American Phase B high cross-range Orbiter proposed design for the Space Shuttle, circa 1971 (ref "Space Shuttle, the History of the National Space Transportation System, the First 100 Missions," Dennis R. Jenkins, pp. 120, 133).Note that the booster is a manned vehicle which would be flown back to Kennedy Space Center. | |
