Some poor soul will fall for this cheap buy it now price and think they are getting a bargain.

I would expect someone to correct me if I'm wrong, but only one type of autopen style is known to have been used by Ed White & the Ed White signature just sold on eBay is not similar to that style. It appears, rather, to be a very questionable signature that is close to White's style & is good enough to have fooled a lot of collectors.

Because of its quality, we should be wary of other Ed White signatures offered on eBay and maybe all astronaut signatures offered by this particular seller. It would be beneficial to learn the seller's source of this particular Ed White signature example.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Armstrong signed Saturn litho he also has on there? It looks good to me, and I almost pulled the trigger on it, but had second thoughts.I'm glad I did since I saw this, but that doesn't mean his other stuff isn't real. Just wondering. Thanks

I hesitate to get into a is it good?-is it bad? discussion, but I have checked out the seller's other current & closed auctions and do have concerns about the Armstrong signed Saturn V photo - with a low and tempting $499 Buy it Now. He offered a collector's card signed by Shepard that is hard to see but could be questionable & of note is a very bad Donn Eisele signature on an Apollo 7 cover. But some other items offered by him are certainly authentic. IMO, before bidding on anything from this seller (and maybe any eBay seller), it would be a good idea to get opinions from others.

IMO, it's a forgery. Pretty deceptive as far as forgeries go, but a certain forgery IMO.

I'd like to see a better scan, but offhand, it appears very stiffly drawn and there are a few key inconsistancies in the formation.

RE: Ed White autopens

Ed White had two autopen patterns. I have both on covers (as well as an original signature on a TLS).

Thanks, Dave. I rely on & refer to my two old autopen guides and both show only one Ed White autopen example. Back in the early '80's, German dealer Michael Goede published a very good AP guide on transparent paper that allows you to place the AP example over the possible AP signature to see if they match. And I also use the guide published by Vaughan & Gutzke in 1989 that shows AP examples of only flown NASA Astronauts thru STS-27. It's time for me to get a more up-to-date autopen guide but don't know of one.

Dave, since you have autopen examples of two different types of Ed White APs, how do your two examples compare to the Ed White signature that was sold on eBay? But that signature doesn't appear to be an AP.

I should have been more specific in my original post. To me its a forgery not a autopen. Sorry for any confusion.

Besides the bad signature ,,,,
Looking at the whole picture <G> why would anyone sell a Ed White uninscribed photo for 279.00 Surely this dealer knows the space market and it wouldnt take too much to find out what White's value is in the marketplace.

hello collectors,
i´m the seller for the ed white signed photo. i optained the photo in washington dc about 5 months ago while the astronaut event from a dealer with 10 other signed items. all other visitors told me, that the signature is real...and i´ve shown several collectors this photo. it´ not an autopen. i do have all autopen signatures issued by goede.
i would be very happy to get any references that the signature is a fake. i´m sure it´s real.
thanks!

RE; Ed White autopens

In response to Bob's query, the signature on the photo is different than the two autopen patterns I have on covers sent to Ed White in l965-66.

The signature on the photo is not an autopen, but it is also different in some ways from the genuine Ed White signature I have on a TLS and the others I have seen. I don't claim to be an expert, but personally I would not bid on this item.
