I wondered about that also. The signature does seem good at first take. If that is the case all I can think that White signed a blank envelope some years previously and then the owner produced his own cachet when the stamp was issued and had it franked. Why? No idea. The dates were always going to ring alarm bells somewhere.Steve |

I stumbled over that one too.The seller has quite a few other signed covers from the Sam Stein collection that are not postmarked, just signed. I would therefor support your conclusion that he got himself a lot of blank covers signed and later had postmarked some, others not. If at least the postmarker had any direct connection with the signer (such as the umptieth anniversary of Gemini 4 or so) this would make sense, but with this postmarker ... I wonder what Sam had on his mind then .... ------------------

I've bought several good items from this seller (and this collection) including an Anders cover with the Viking emblem. No idea why the owner wanted to put an irrelevant marking on the cover, but IMHO it's likely to be a good autograph. Paul Bramley |

The White certainly looks ok - I can't understand the postmark either however...Maybe someone found the blanc cover signed already by White (and possibly planned to be cancelled for Apollo 1) and then got it cancelled with the next available space postmarker. I have seen similar covers signed by other astronauts that died before their first mission such as Williams, Givens, Freeman, Chaffee etc. - it's not too uncommon. Remember for many people the cover, postmarker etc. means nothing, the signature is important - not everybody is a philatelist.  Again if you find a 1989 Apollo 11 20th anniversary cover signed by Neil - now my alarm bells would be ringing.  Florian |

I also think the owner has sent blank covers to the different astronauts before cancellation.I have done it in the past also. |

Yes, I have many similar signed covers (several from White and a few from Freeman, See, Bassett, Chaffee, and others) that contain postal cancels from the mid-70s. There were two early autograph cover collctors that would send unstamped envelope covers to have signed by NASA astronauts from the early groups. One of those collectors has long passed away. Many of his unstamped, but signed, covers were later postmarked at KSC for the twin Viking Mars missions. I have a few others that were processed for other milestone space events; i.e. Chaffee signature on a blank cover later postmarked for Apollo 11's historic moonlanding in July 1969 and a White cover cancelled for Apollo 7's launch into space, the first manned Apollo spaceflight since the tragic Apollo fire that killed White and crewmates Grissom and Chaffee. One can rest assured, the signatures that I know of--and this one posted on this thread--are certainly authentic. Why so many were cancelled for the Viking shots in 1975 isn't known to me, as I believe, both early collectors referred to are no longer with us. |
