Available now! CDs containing hundreds of hi-res images from the combined collections of J.L. Pickering and Ed Hengeveld. The scans have been color corrected and repaired where necessary. Photo IDs and brief descriptions are also included in most cases in the file names. This series of CDs is a result of hard work by two highly motivated collectors, who felt it was time to fill a void in the world of space history. There is a considerable number of images that can be found when it comes to Shuttle missions since 2000. The trail-blazing early missions have been left with what seems like the same images that have been seen over and over. It is hoped that these discs will enable you to view the early days of the Space Shuttle in a more visually complete way. In addition, you can download the images onto your computer and have them printed. Future sets are in production that will cover the remaining Space Shuttle missions, as well as the Mercury through ASTP missions. STS-1 (about 850 scans): $29.95 STS-2 (about 450 scans): $19.95 STS-3 (about 450 scans): $19.95 STS-4 (about 275 scans): $19.95 Domestic shipping and handling is $2.95. International orders need to inquire before sending any money (Roverpick@aol.com). Payment can be made to: J.L. Pickering P.O. Are you planning to do the STS discs before you start on the Mercury thru ASTP missions or will there be a mixed release schedule? |

I anticipate releasing the MR-3 material in hi-res sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. There are a number of other early missions in a state of near completion as well. The fact that the compilations are much bigger on the early flights will play into the release schedule. Bottom line is that the early material will not always be released in sequence, where the STS flight will maintain a fairly regular pace... and in sequence. STS-7 looks to be about 7-10 days away. |

For the past several months we have been working at making CDs available with hi-quality scans covering the early Shuttle missions. What are your thoughts about these image libraries? We would appreciate any comments...J.L. Pickering Ed Hengeveld

I purchased the first four and intend to purchase the next three that have been released. They are excellent resources. The only suggestion I would make would be for the inclusion of some type of thumbnail browser, if only like the index sheet examples that have been posted to this thread. Sometimes, when seeking an image, its easier to do a visual search than reference photo ID numbers. Of course, I could use NASA's search engine and then retrieve the photo from your CDs, but that only works when I am online. |

Robert, you are right that a visual search is often the best way to find a photo. I guess everybody has their own preference in picture viewers, but there is a thumbnail function in Windows Explorer where you can display small pictures instead of a file listing. That would allow you to quickly find certain images. |

When you say scanned at 300 dpi is that 300 dpi scan of the negative or a 300 dpi scan of an 8x10? |

I received a copy of the Apollo 15 disc, and it's a wonderful treasure trove of both well-known and lesser-known moments during, before and after the mission. The resolution is great, so clicking through the panoramic shots on the lunar surface gives a great feeling of being there. And there are some fun training shots showing some wonderful human interactions between the crewmembers. I found it fascinating - there is something about a high-res image on a computer screen, the way the light glows in an image, that captures a moment better than any printed photo. We get to see these shots better than anyone probably did at the time, arguably better than anyone has other than the people who took them.I like the way it concentrated most on the people, too, with the technology in context. Thanks so much for putting this great collection together. |

That is 300dpi (or sometimes even 400) for 8x10 prints. The 35mm negs are scanned at 1800 dpi, 4x6 negs and transparencies are scanned at 600dpi. |

So I'm not the only one who thinks this! I hardly look at my prints anymore and there may come a day when I throw them all out. I can carry my whole collection of 75,000 plus photos with me on a laptop... Thanks for your comments, Francis. |

Are you planning to cover all Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab + ASTP and Shuttle flight? If so, and counting up to STS-9, we're looking at a total of $1,457.95... (ok, more or less, add $10 for STS-1). |

Thanks Ed, that was what I was hoping to hear. As I'm scaling back on collecting signed items it would be nice to collect some of these DVDs... |

I must give some long overdue kudos to JL for his fabulous DVD. I've been working with Al Worden on a project and have been using JL's Apollo 15 DVD for reference work. It is truly spectacular. He and Ed have an incredible collection and should be commended for making such a fine group of photos available to the general public. It is very obvious the amount of time and effort that was put into making this production. It's works like this and works like Spacecraft Films that will keep the dream alive for generations to come. |

Thanks Tracy. We have also heard from other astronauts, who are sometimes amazed because there are photos on the discs that they have never seen before. |
