For those who can't make it Tuesday to the American Museum of Natural History or Thursday to the Intrepid, never fear! Wednesday the last shuttle crew will be at the Eventi Hotel near Penn Station, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don't say you missed your chance!
LIVE FROM NEW YORK... Join NASA and Eventi on Wednesday, August 17th from 10am to 4pm as the Eventi Plaza is transformed into a "mini-space outpost" filled with displays of cool NASA gadgets and interactive exhibits for children and adults including:
  • Q&A session with the astronaut crew of Atlantis, the last space mission shuttle
  • An actual Mars Rover
  • Demonstrations of space exploration & shuttle launches
  • The Journey to Tomorrow trailer featuring an interactive environment packed with hands-on activities and digital learning stations
  • The Eyes on the Solar System exhibit
  • A 3-D virtual experience which allows visitors to hop on an asteroid or fly with NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft and much more...
Space explorers/fans can get more details and a sneak-peak of the NASA-Eventi event via Facebook.
The hotel is convenient to Penn Station, at 851 Avenue of the Americas.

NASA release
Elmo Joins Space Shuttle Crew at New York City Event

Elmo, Sesame Street's furry red monster, will appear at NASA's free public event at 10:15 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Eventi Plaza located behind the hotel on the Avenue of the Americas between 29th and 30th Streets in New York City.

There, Elmo will join the crew of space shuttle Atlantis. Elmo was recently a special guest at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 8 where he saw the liftoff of the final space shuttle mission. NASA is pleased to be working with Sesame Street and focusing on STEM education, encouraging children to think critically about science, technology, engineering and math.

The New York event, titled "What's Your Favorite Space?," will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Eventi Plaza will be transformed into a miniature space outpost filled with displays including: an inflatable Mars rover; demonstrations; interactive exhibits; video segments; children's activities and more.

NASA has begun a reinvigorated exploration, innovation and technology development program that promises to lead humans and robots to an array of challenging destinations. Preview those destinations at the Eventi Hotel through the eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope and the scientific satellites that are the precursors to journeys beyond low-Earth orbit and into deep space.

I presume that the crew will not be there the entire time. Does anyone have any information as to when they will arrive (there seems to be a conflict between this event and the AMNH)?

For those looking for a later visit, hoping to avoid crowds, you may wish to scrub that mission. I arrived at 11:30 to find the crew gone. Eventually tracked down someone with NASA in the know (I hope) and was informed that the crew would not be returning.

You just missed the autograph signing. Doug Hurley and Sandy Magnus was signing from 10.30 to 11.00, then Chris Ferguson and Rex Walheim for another half hour after them.

Following the Eventi, they did a not open to the public appearance at the Hall of Science in Queens, as well as meeting with Mayor Bloomberg. (Lori Garver, NASA's deputy administrator, was at the Eventi and would be with the 135 crew at the other events.)

Being mid-work day, there really wasn't that big a crowd. Initially, Magnus and Hurley were signing one item each, necessitating a trip back on the line if one wanted a second item signed. Then on the second go-around it was either Magnus or Hurley, but both signed a second one for me. Ferguson and Walheim each signed two items in one pass. A bit of a scrum, but just had to be patient. The line moved relatively quickly.

My photos from the event (the event at the Eventi?) can be found here. Just scroll through the bunch. I'll scan my signed photo and post that later as well.

Seems they played miniature golf while there...

My understanding is that they met with some schoolkids as well at the Hall of Science.

My signed crew pic is now on my Flickr acct as well. Or look here.

In addition to going to the Hall of Science, having dinner with Mayor Bloomberg and returning to the Eventi Hotel in the evening for a private reception, the STS-135 crew and NASA Associate Administrator Lori Garver also joined Bloomberg for a tour of Ground Zero.
