A very enjoyable morning at the AMNH with the Atlantis crew. They arrived, in dramatic fashion, walking down the stairway below the Hayden Planetarium to the strains of the opening theme of '2001'. After brief impressions of their flight, they showed a highlights video of the STS-135 mission, then opened the floor to questions from the kids sitting in front of them. One amusing question was Hurley's favorite meal onboard: shrimp cocktail. The others chimed in that he had the delicacy for 'breakfast, lunch and dinner'!
After a presentation of a flown flag and mission patch to a museum official, the astronauts were led around to a table to sign autographs. Based on posts reporting on the crews' other NY appearences, this part went smoothly and everyone in line got their covers, photos, shuttle models (someone even bought one at the gift shop steps away) signed. The event staff even provided a crew litho for signing. One sign that the future of the space program (and this website) is in good hands: a young girl, with her father, was sitting near me with an Atlantis t-shirt and her STS-135 launch pass and mission guide in her hands..
