Yesterday we had our first moonwalker at Downey, and it was Buzz!
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) had a meeting to discuss the President's NASA mission (or lack thereof) with Dr. Bob Zubrin of the Mars Society, Jeff Greason of the recent Augustine Commission and president of XCOR, and Mark Hopkins, well known space advocate. Moderating was Dean Davis of the AIAA Los Angeles chapter. At the last second Buzz Aldrin was able to fly in from the Cayman Islands. As it was - I had the honor of greeting all, and supplying the models of shuttle, heavy lift and Falcon 1, for comparison.
Buzz was in great spirits with a healthy tan, and told me of his three dives in a submarine the day before. He was alone so I tried to assist and let him be more at ease.
It must be so hard to be Buzz Aldrin, as everyone, even those I thought would understand - were demanding of the good doctor and his time.
The meeting was well attended and was co-hosted by the Aerospace Legacy Foundation at the new Columbia Space Center in Downey.
About 150 or so people attended on this Monday afternoon.
Buzz and Jeff Greason made the most compelling statements for sensible, duel commercial and NASA programs so all can get up to speed and NASA can buy services while transitioning back to basics and downsizing like the former NACA.
Others took more dire positions.
Buzz will be back on the 30th for the dedication Of our Challenger Center. We hope many of you can be there too. Google the Columbia Center for more info.
Thanks to all who made this a great event!
