More to come later - and I'm sure some cSers who were there can fill in - but my impressions:

Mattingly talked about what it was really like to watch Apollo 13, as opposed to the movie. One mistake, he told the producers, was when he (Gary Sinise) was standing next to a Corvette watching the launch.

"Oh, we knew you would never stand that close," the producers said.

"It's not that," Mattingly said. "I never had a Corvette."

There was an overflow crowd, watching the talk not only from the hall's upper seating (think typical lecture hall), but also by TV from another hall across the way.

Unfortunately, Mattingly talked sans mike. I believe there was one at the lecturn, so I don't know whether he forewent one because he wanted to walk across the stage or there wasn't a wireless mike. Even if you knew the story of Apollo 13, there were still parts of his talk that you missed. (I'll drop an email to TPTB later.)

Most disappoingly was not that he didn't sign, but it seemed to be, "Well, that's how Apollo 13 ended, it's 8:30, gotta go." And then he received a present from the college, went out the back, and was gone. I would have loved at least ask a few questions of him - I for one wanted to ask about his STS-10 to 51C switch, to clear up who was to have flown on 41E (which I believe was his, not Bobko's flight, since I have a tracking map labeled STS-16/41F, signed by Seddon), if the PS was someone other than Payton, and if there was any difference in training with the switch from Challenger to Discovery on 51C.

Hart,

We were sitting behind you on the right, about four or five seats down the row. I was going to say Hi, but I lost you in the crowd when it ended. The sound was definately a problem, but the amount of small kids that weren't interested in the least was my biggest peeve! The family behind me took their kids out of soccer practice to attend and the kids complained the whole time.

All in all, it was a nice presentation. I decided to see if anyone was waiting to see if he would sign. There was about 20 people waiting behind the stage. One of the attendants with the blue NASA shirt said he was going back to ask him if he was coming out, but after 30 minutes he didn't come out either. I assume he didn't make an appearance.

We (my wife and I) were distracted by the toddler in left front who cried twice before being taken out by the mom. Yeah, the event was open to the public, but what did the mom think was going to happen? A showing of Apollo 13 the movie? Even then, that might have been much for someone so young.

We waited about a half hour afterward to see if Mattingly would make an appearance, but after a while was told he had left the building. The Secret Service should take a lesson from him on how to clear someone from a building....

A few of us from the Northern New Jersey and New York City contingent were in the crowd as well. Luckily, we were seated in one of the front rows and could hear a bit better, however, agree there were some issues with the audio. Interestingly, Mattingly was willing to sign based on an exchange we watched between him and his BCC handlers. Unfortunately, they briskly took him away. I think the BCC staff could have accomodated the few folks who wanted a photo/autograph given he was willing to do it. Despite this and the long drive home, it was a great lecture and we all had a good time.

Had a Great time. My son who has no interest in Apollo took me to the lecture. Great son. I broke my leg and have limited mobility. It would have been nice if BCC spent some of the grant money on a sound system. I sat in the front row and still had difficulty hearing. It was still great to see and listen to a Ken Mattingly in person.
