I understand that Scott Carpenter will be honored in some fashion at the Intrepid's festivities tomorrow for Veteran's Day.

cSers all know this, but the Intrepid was the recovery ship for Aurora 7 on May 24, 1962. Big doings, with its restoration and reopening.

Hi Kris-

That's great news and so appropriate. I saw your Dad on Friday at the show at KSC. I gave him a Mercury patch. He seemed so pleased with it. A true gentleman - but of course you know that.

It's nice that he is being honored on the Intrepid. I've been to that museum and it is a wonderful testament to the people who served on it....and those who were recovered on it.

Lou,

I apologize abjectly. I have nothing on times. Can't get a press release or anything.

The museum's website shows that it is closed in the morning for a "private event".

The doors open to the public at 2:00 p.m.. I think it is a fair bet that whatever they have planned with Carpenter will take place before then.

This CNN show airing today may have some footage of the event.

And I see CNN is covering it now.

All-

I recived an invitation to this several weeks ago but there was no mention of Carpenter, so I just filed away. You'll be glad to hear the Navy didn't forget about it. A group of four F-14's were doing a few low passes in the area (quite a act when you consider the main vector for Newark is right over my house). All in all it was a good show even if I missed standing on the deck of the Intrepid with the Dynamic Pioneer himself. N.Y.C. was still saluting their service 40+ years later.

I heard on the WTOP radio station that Buzz Aldrin was also present at this event.

Carpenter, Aldrin and Pres. Bush "tossed" a wreath into the Hudson River at this event honoring and remembering Veterans...

Missed it. Will any of this be aired on the NASA Channel or elsewhere?

I saw a snippet of film on my SlingBoxed MSNBC--showing the wreath toss. I saw two figures--the president and another man who looked like Carpenter from the back--but I suppose it could have been Aldrin.

The CNN reporting was valiant and respectful, but I was pained by the correspondent's chirpy reference, as she introduced Aldrin and Carpenter to the camera, to the Intrepid's having "a role during peacetime!"

It's like someone mislaid the cold war in the history of the USS Intrepid.

The speach by President Bush and the tossing of the wreath were rebroadcast on C-Span. I thought it was a moving ceremony.

All times are CT (US)
