The Orlando Sentinel's Hal Boedeker ('The TV Guy') reports that Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" has announced its celebrity players for the new season:
"Beverly Hills, 90210" alumna Jennie Garth is another player. So are astronaut Robert "Hoot" Gibson, zookeeper Jack Hanna, astrophysicist George Fitzgerald Smoot III (a Nobel laureate) and "Jeopardy!" all-star Ken Jennings.
Model Kathy Ireland will kick off the Jeff Foxworthy-hosted show's third season at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. No word yet as to when Gibson's (or Smoot's) episode will air.

The celebrities will be competing to win money for their favorite charities. Gibson has been a longtime supporter of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, though there has yet to be confirmation as to which organization he is playing on behalf.

According to TV Guide's listings, the October 3 airing of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? includes "a former NASA astronaut" among the contestants.

The kids are no challenge for Hoot.

I have known Commander Gibson for a lot of years, as he came from here and he is one of the quietest but most intelligent guys I have met.

Go get em, Hoot!

I had the honor of meeting Hoot Gibson when he was the chief of the astronaut corp back in 1994. A true American hero and all around great guy!

I was cheering and really hoping to see the ASF pick up a cool million!

But... In my mind, I made the same mistake Hoot made. Of course "1" is a factor of any number, but the practical side of us ignores it-- In reducing any expression by factoring to solve an equation, dividing by one achieves nothing so we don't think of it as a 'factor.'

Hoot was cool all the way through though- liked how he explained every answer for the benefit of all the kids there- he should 'retire' into teaching!

And - 25 grand to ASF is AOK!

Great episode! Nice to see his wife Rhea Seddon and kids in the audience cheering him on, and the words of encouragement from John Glenn and Jim Lovell. The Michelangelo "gotcha" Hoot pulled on Jeff Foxworthy was pretty good too!

If you missed the episode on TV, you can now watch the full show on Fox's website.

My wife was flicking channels Friday night looking for something to watch on T.V (is there anything ever on?). To my surprise my wife turned it to "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader".

We never watch that show (really), so I have no idea what was going on with it other than the fact that Gibson had worked his way through and had won $500,000 dollars and decided to risk it for a shot at one million dollars.

Sadly (spoiler here) he risked it all on a math question and got it wrong and his winnings were reduced to $25,000.

Sorry to see that Hoot I was really pulling for you!

The question was: "How many common factors there are between number 28 and number 32?" (if I remember correctly).

Of course, I had the right answer!

But unlike Hoot, I would have needed to use my cheats to get there as my knowledge of US history and US geography is not too good...
