collectSPACE member Gerhard Daum has passed along details of the opening of his exhibit, "Apollo and Beyond" at the Technik Museum Speyer in Germany: After more than three years of hard work with my partner Martina Faikis, we will have the grand opening of the exhibition "Apollo and Beyond" on October 2, 2008. October 2, 6:00 pm

Just received the following info: the grand opening on October 2nd is for invited guests only and guess what, I'm not invited. On October 3rd the museum will be open to the general public and in the evening there will be the lecture by Charlie Duke and a viewing of a movie in the IMAX theatre, called "Mission Mond" in German, presumably "Magnificent Desolation", although I'm not sure it will be shown in 3D here. Note that the evening with Charlie Duke has a sweet ticket price of 150 Euro per nose... that's slightly under 200 Dollars... |

Well, that was some birthday party! Charlie Duke started his presentation with an introduction into his background and some highlights of his career, including the unforgettable "Roger, Twan... Tranquility" and then showed a video first and slides next to accompany his story of Apollo 16, after which there was time left for some questions. When you have read a number of books and seen a number of documentaries it's not that you hear all that much you didn't know already, but the times I have had the good fortune of hearing the adventure told by some of the astronauts themselves it still thrills me and makes me all the more impressed by the wonder of it all and this was no exception. The story of Mattingly's wedding ring, the Olympic jumps that ended in his falling on his back pack, the Grand Prix, the famous picture near Plum Crater, the scary dream a few months before the flight, a graphic demonstration of how to jump onto the Rover, what incredible tales!And obviously singing Happy Birthday out loud with a group of other space fans to celebrate Charlie Duke's 73th birthday made it all the more memorable! The party ended with a wild scramble from the forum seats to the stage to which I plead equally guilty, but Gerhard Daum managed to rescue Charlie Duke from posing and autographing. I did bring a book just in case but so did 150 others so I can well understand why. 
The expo itself was obviously dominated by the Buran. Impressive to see but also slightly sad to realize its unfulfilled potential. 
Other objects included Spacelab mock-ups, a life-size model of the Rover, a number of flown space suits and clothing, and quite a few objects that I would have liked in my collection if only my resources were somewhat less limited, like flown flags, checklists, food cubes and the like. I was glad to find that at least I already do have the Cernan Corp Apollo 17 flown outer skin presentation. Who knows, maybe that's how Gerhard Daum got started as well so there might still be hope for me.
