The first two questions that come to mind are:

1) It's NOT in the top seven already? Really?

2) How is the Grand Canyon a possible new wonder?

According to GMA's website, the "new" wonders are limited to:
  • inventions or places that were "recently revealed, discovered, or seen in a new light";

  • human-made or naturally occurring marvels; and,

  • if man-made, does not do great destruction to nature;
I suppose "recently revealed" is relative; the last time the list was composed was over 2,000 years ago (per USA Today), thus allowing for the Grand Canyon to be considered.

The panelists who were convened to assemble the new list were: oceanographer, explorer and author Sylvia Earle; author Bruce Feiler; journalist and travel writer Pico Iyer; co-founder of Adventure Divas Holly Morris; high-altitude archaeologist Johan Reinhard; and astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson.

I imagine the Saturn V would have made the list of seven expert-endorsed wonders had the panel included an engineer.

collectSPACE (and soon all the computers at Rocket Town) will have voted for the Saturn V.

I suspect the list is also a bit skewed to provide the best November-sweeps-morning-news-visuals as well.

A cynic?

Who was in charge of the site's photos? Of all the countless photos of the Saturn V, they went with THAT one?! Geez!
And the Panama Canal? What, the blueprint wasn't available?!
These are good 'historical' photos, but not for swinging 'Wonder' votes to the masses.
Anyway, I still voted for that tube looking thing with the tent on the front...

I guess one should vote for something which is likely to disappear "soon". The Panama canal is going to be enlarged so I don't see the point; the Grand Canyon and Victoria Falls can wait; The Saturn V is in a building so it can also wait. I voted for Machu Pichu, which like the Great Wall in China, suffers from erosion and might disappear sooner than we think.

I agree. It's like they went to a big effort to find the least inspiring Saturn V photo ever in order to sway the votes away.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Saturn V photos that could do a much better job, such as:

The original 7 wonders were all man-made so how can they include naturally-occuring locations in the list? To compare the Saturn V with Grand Canyon is bizarre to say the least.

Paul,

It's funny how the mind can initially grasp a comment and then twist it from its original form altogether. When I read your comment "The original 7 wonders were all man-made ...", I immediately thought of Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, Cooper and Slayton; all "original 7 wonders" and all certainly "man-made"!

Sorry to stray from exact topic, but I wanted to share the word play.

Best,
Bruce

Last chance to vote this weekend! Voting ends November 6. They said on ABC this morning that over 43,000 votes have come in. I think we have a chance at this one!!!
