I am currently assisting the ICT & Space Technology Team at the London Science Museum with the schedule planned for this summer.

A series of events is planned rather than one main 40th Anniversary theme and the following is an indication of what will be happening.

  • The Science Museum launches its 12 months of centenary celebrations late June, 2009

  • A high-profile part will be a trail/journey along the ground floor of the Museum through three different galleries that takes in 10 of the Museum's most significant objects including Thompson's Atmospheric Engine, a V2 rocket engine, Crick and Watson's DNA molecular model and the Apollo 10 capsule.

  • The first themed season coming within the 12 month centenary programme will be Space Summer (provisional title) in which two main events are highlighted: the launch of the Museum's new temporary exhibition on 400 years of astronomy -- Cosmos and Culture; and the 40th anniversary of Apollo.

  • Space Summer will also involve film screenings, gallery-based activities, a special space-themed late show (July 29th) when the Museum stays open into the evening with adult-orientated events such as a special music concert (not classical), along with other attractions etc. and, of course, due 40th anniversary recognition of the Apollo artefacts on display in the Exploring Space gallery (principally J-2 engine, fuel cell, lunar sample, lunar module replica) and, of course, the Apollo 10 command service module in the Making the Modern World gallery.

Note: the centenary/Apollo anniversary interventions in the Apollo 10 display will not constitute the permanent changes we wish to make to improve its display; these will now be done later on this year or next.

  • One of the new attractions being launched during Space Summer is the Legend of Apollo simulation with Dave Scott, who worked on the project and was filmed in the Museum. He may be able to be present at the simulation's launch but at the moment we do not know how his diary is bearing up. The launch is likely to be round July 23rd but the date is not yet confirmed, as far as I know.
It is also hoped to present "Lecture evenings" involving Apollo related personnel. This is obviously dependent upon schedules but talks are currently in progress.

I hasten to add that plans are not finalised at this stage but there is frantic activity to ensure the Museum presents a memorable programme for this year.

According to NASA, David Scott will present his Ambassador of Exploration moon rock award to the Science Museum on June 9.

Details regarding the presentation have yet to be announced, including whether the ceremony will be public.

For many years Bill Anders' Apollo 8 spacesuit was at the Science Museum but the last time I was there it was missing from its display case.

Will it be included in this new exhibition or has it gone "home" permanently?

Look forward to hearing the finalised details, I was finding it really hard to believe that nothing was going on there this year!

I really hope something is organised on July 22nd, 23rd or 24th because I will be in London during that period.

I may get to the Dave Scott evening.

I have given some lectures at the Science Museum which was really good. I will make sure I give my contact a call tomorrow to find out what's going on.

Sorry I will miss Sy, et al, in July, I will still be in China then as I don't get back to the UK until the 31st July.

Sy, I still have your email and you are still on my email list regarding lectures. As soon as time allows I will see what I can do.

Maybe not this year but next.

We are currently "in talks" regarding personal appearances however, the problem is mainly one of schedules. You will be kept posted!

The intention of my announcement was to inform you that the Museum is extremely busy with plans for this anniversay year and I am pleased about that, particularly for the UK and European space enthusiast contingent.

As you know, Sy Liebergot is now a confirmed appearance for July.

At the risk of sounding furtive, I am unable to elaborate further at this stage but it will hopefully be a full and exciting year. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the info Mike!

That spacesuit was a 'good friend' of mine, as whenever I was in London I'd drop by and have another long look.

Good to know it's safe and being enjoyed somewhere else too

Certainly an understandable assumption to make -- one disappears one place, and we indeed have a Bill Anders Apollo space suit on public display here at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, right next to the Apollo 9 command module. However, our suit and the suit in London were on simultaneous display for decades.

My understanding (and I am not the curator, although I have asked them about this) is the London suit is the flown suit, and the one here is the training suit (certainly it saw its share of wear). It seems that many of the flown suits are being recalled by the Smithsonian for greater conservation efforts, often meaning they will not be on public display again. My (uninformed) guess is that this is what may have happened to the London suit. We have not heard of any plans for backup and training suits, including ours, to be recalled.

Coincidentally, yesterday we had a visitor from DuPont Aviation to record some historical details of the Anders suit here, so while the curators were there and the exhibition case was open, I took some close-up images of the suit, posted here.

One obvious difference between the training suit and the flown suit is that no mission insignia patch was applied to the training suit. Still... I wouldn't mind having that in my collection.

Andy Green and myself paid a visit to The Science Museum in London yesterday. Andy discovered that the Bill Anders flown Apollo 8 suit is no longer on display but IS still in the UK. It is in museum storage pending return to the US we understand, but it can be viewed privately by prior arrangement.

Has anyone heard anything further about the planned events at the Science Museum this summer?

The Science Museum website doesn't have anything on there that I can see.

Starts? I thought we'd already had summer this year, or did you mean 11 days till it really starts raining?!

Back to the plot, it seems a bit odd that nothing has been communicated yet. Looking back at the posts on this thread Dave Scott was due to present his Ambassador of Exploration moon rock award to them yesterday and Sy Liebergot's scheduled presentations are only just over a month away.

This just posted to Flight International's website. I really enjoy these photos.

Flight International: Take a look inside Apollo X's command module

To mark last month's 40th anniversary of the Apollo X "lunar landing dress rehearsal" mission, the Science Museum in London opened its command module Charlie Brown to visitors.

...the museum expects a wave of interest in its Apollo exhibits in the coming months as NASA prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's historic Moon landing, on 20 July.

I have requested the London Science Museum publish an itinerary of this summers events.

This is a matter beyond my control but I have emphasised the importance of allowing UK based Space enthusiasts the opportunity of planning ahead.

One of the problems is committal and changing schedules from those invited. I can confirm Sy Liebergot's presentation on the 29th July.

Reference the Apollo 8 Anders spacesuit. I was fortunate to have a private viewing last week as it is in the process of being returned to the Smithsonian.

Hi everyone, just noticed this while perusing the boards - I'm from the Science Museum, although I'm in online marketing rather than anything curatorial. However I'll help answer some of your questions.

The Science Museum Space season starts on the 23rd July and will include tours of the galleries, family events and a Space science night.

Alongside that there's the new gallery, Cosmos and Culture, opens on the 23rd as well, a brand new exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of the astronomical telescope, a mini sci-fi film festival, a space-themed Lates, a special performance of Brian Eno’s 'Apollo' and highlights in the Exploring Space gallery. Lots happening...

Someone asked about Dave Scott - he's at the museum next week to launch our motion theatre film Force Field (the film uses NASA archival footage, and Col. Scott's personal reminiscences). This is a press event however, but if anyone wants to apply for a press pass on behalf of a website or blog, send me an email or private message and I'll give you more details.

I found the details of Sy's presentation on the Science Museum website:
29 July and 26 August: 18:45 – 22:00
FREE
Over 18s only

Just a few days after the 40th anniversary of the first Moon landing, Sy Liebergot will be exclusively presenting his own experiences working at Nasa throughout the Apollo programme. Also see the actual Apollo 10 Command Module and watch films by renowned space film maker, Chris Riley. At Lates adults can have the Science Museum, its world-class collections and interactive galleries all to themselves and enjoy gallery tours, music and a bar all evening. Adults can also enjoy shameless playtime in the famous interactive Launchpad without having to let the kids go first! The 24 June will be themed around the Science Museum’s Centenary and the 29 July will include space themed activities.

Anyone know how these 'Lates' work, it says free entry but do you need a ticket of some sort if there is a talk? If so is it a first come first served on the night or can they accomodate as many people that want to be there?

The London Science Museum appears to be hard at work filling my two days I'll spend there (July 29 and 30): "There will be pre-publicity on the web in the next few days and, on the day, there will be Tannoy announcements etc."

The fact that I can't get to this next week is causing me hourly pain. My favourite album by my favourite composer, performed live for the first time.
