Space Cover of the Week, Week 541 (December 1, 2019)

Space Cover #541: Apollo 12 Recovery Team Covers

Just over 50 years ago, on November 24, 1969, the USS Hornet recovered the Apollo 12 crew after they performed the second moon landing mission. In addition to the usual array of Navy Cachets, Beck Cachets, Captain's Covers, and assorted commercial cachets postmarked on the Hornet that day were the two covers above. Both are on #10 envelopes and were hand cancelled aboard the Hornet that day.

The top cover's cachet mentions the "NASA Recovery Team", and on my copy has the typed name "Moorman" in the lower left corner (others that I have seen do not have the typed name in the corner).

The bottom cover's cachet mentions "Recovery Team... Apollo…USS Hornet CVS-12".

I've never been able to find any information on these cachets like who made them, numbers, etc. Does anyone have any more information on these? If so, please post it here!

Dennis, the only difference between your top cover for the Apollo 12 recovery cover and mine is that the Navy RSC was applied to mine, and I was able to get the Apollo 12 crew to sign it. My guess (and only a guess) is that it was printed aboard the PRS, but evidently with a very small quantity as these have been so seldom reported or seen.

All times are CT (US)
