SpacePatches.nl shares: Russian EVA-32 patch worn by Pavel Vinogradov, as transmitted to Earth during the April 19 spacewalk by Roman Romanenko's helmet camera. The patch - showing an Orlan helmet reflecting the Expedition 35 design by Paul Fjeld - was designed by Luc van den Abeelen and produced by Spacepatches.nl at the request of the crew. |

This is one of my favourites among the most recently issued patches. The shape is the striking feature. Not the first time spacepatches.nl have come up with an interesting shape. The Soyuz TMA-04M was an excellent innovation as well. Here's looking forward to the future with this particular team of designers. |

It might be noted that this patch can be clearly seen in Chris Hadfield's now-viral music video for "Space Oddity." |

Just a suggestion...I actually wanted one of these EVA-32 patches but they were sold out before I could even try to order. My observation is that there is an IMMENSE demand for space patches, especially in replica or unique designs, and that the "market" will bear FAR more than a quantity or population of 25 in a limited production run. I personally believe that a run of patches that are intended to be offered for public sale at all, should be at a BARE MINIMUM of 100 pieces initially, and be subject to increase as demand for the item may escalate. I don't see very much potential for someone to be left holding the bag with a stack of unsold patches in special cases like these. |

Sometimes, it Is a bit more complicated. I remember that the EVA-32 patch was a very late request by the crew and our main concern was to get these in time for them before their spaceship took off. Under those circumstances, you simply do not risk having a large batch produced. Also, we are not a commercial company, but a foundation. We try to promote the use of patches by the cosmonauts, while giving collectors the opportunity to get these at affordable prices. We are not in this to make money. With our 'profits', we finance new projects for the crews. So, say, by ordering the Soyuz TMA-09M patch, you as a collector are one of the people who make it possible in the first place that there will be a Soyuz TMA-10M patch. While this approach is giving us the freedom to sometimes follow our hearts (like ordering the corrected Expedition-36 patches for the crew with AB Emblem) we also have to make very sure we do not spend too much of our own money and time. We all have our families and normal dayjobs. In that respect, stocking large numbers of patches would add a lot of pressure to what we do (for fun) and the way we do it. Sometimes, it is hard to find the right balance. Like with the Tereshkova full size patch (which we primarily produced at the request of spacesuit manufacturer Zvezda, with the 'deal' including an agreement on how many we would be allowed to sell to the public to help finance the project), we will see what we can do though with this particular patch, which has indeed been received exceptionally well. Being collectors ourselves, we understand the 'pain' of missing out on a patch like this. One hint: Fyodor Yurchikhin has never made a spacewalk without wearing a specially adapted Expedition patch (the EVA-32 was a gift from him to Pavel and Roman). There will be another Russian EVA (starring Yurchikhin and Alexandr Misurkin) this Monday.
