Topic: Help identifying unknown USAF emblem(s)

Has anyone seen a patch this? And what does it represent? Also, has anyone seen a patch for this organizational emblem?  The first I have never seen anywhere, even though I was based at LAAFS. It has the legend: Sine Qua Non Orbita. The 2nd one is for the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Special Projects - SAFSP, which was Program A of the NRO. |

I've never seen either one, but the patch especially is interesting. That roughly translates from Latin as: Orbit without which there ...which is equally as mysterious.Darn, wish I could help but will check back in hopes SOMEONE has some answers. Good luck! |

Well I have been looking at that first one myself, tried to do some research for it but alas, no findings. From what I see though is obviously looking at something from the early 60's perhaps up into the early 70's, but not much after that. Looking at the icons, the satellite is an early type and the rocket is very early as well. I would probably point you to the 6595, 6555 or 6594 squadrons, they operated out the VAFB and the CAPE back then. Now you also state has anyone seen a patch? Well there may not be one. It could be something they thought of or associated with some documents but the patch may of never been made. Would you have the whole picture to look at and not just the emblem? Perhaps by looking at the background, might figure out the time frame better, what is that rocket in the background? Anyway, my two (worth one) cents... |

You could send a FOIA request to the NRO and the Air Force about it. Warning though, it will most likely take a few months. The first 100 pages are free and anything over 100 is $25. You can find more info on the Air Force FOIA website. |

This isn't a squadron emblem. It's a shield-shaped emblem, so it would have to be a group, wing or establishment (like a center). Squadron emblems are circular.I thought I would be able to track it down by looking at units stationed at Vandenberg, Los Angeles and Edwards, but was unsuccessful. I would drop the Air Force Historical Research Agency a note; They're always very helpful. |

You may or may not be familiar with a cool little book titled "I could tell you but..." by Trevor Paglen. It illustrates and attempts to decode many "black world" Pentagon emblems. Unfortunately, neither of the emblems you're asking about are in the book, but it's a great reference for future mysteries. |

This is what someone on another forum posted: "Sine qua non" is Latin for "without this, nothing" that, along with the "orbita" which is Latinized, presumably means that this organization provides support for boosting payloads to orbit or developing those capabilities." |

I was based at LAAFS/LAAFB from 83 to 88 working for the Deputy Commander for Launch and Control Systems. That was back when the main tenant of base was Space Division(SD). Since the collage was from back when they called it SAMSO (Space and Missile Systems Organization), the emblem could be for the same or equivalent office that I was in.  |
