New patch panel installed in ISS Unity Node 1

"Here's station crew members [Jeff Williams and Frank De Winne], they just installed a new panel in [Unity] Node 1 with all the mission stickers that participated in the assembly of the space station."

-- from STS-129 Flight Day 4 highlights

The "hertiage" panel that was replaced was stowed aboard Atlantis for its return to Earth. The old panel had the following mission decals affixed to it (listed in the order and rows they appeared):

  • STS-88, STS-96, STS-101
  • STS-106, STS-92, STS-97
  • STS-98, STS-102, STS-100
  • Soyuz TM-32, STS-104, STS-105
  • Soyuz TM-33, STS-108, STS-110
  • Soyuz TM-34, STS-112, STS-113
  • STS-114, SFP Greg Olsen, STS-121
  • STS-115, STS-116, STS-117
  • STS-118, STS-120
  • STS-123
  • Astronaut Group 16, Astronaut Sardines, [unknown], STS-122
  • [unknown], STS-124, Soyuz TMA-13, SFP Richard Garriott
  • STS-126

After undocking, Atlantis' commander Charlie Hobaugh radioed station commander Jeff Williams:
"Hey Jeff, we're going to be asking you to throw a couple of stickers on for us," said Hobaugh.

"Yeah, I noticed that was one of the outstanding things we forgot," replied Williams.

"It was one on my list and we missed it," said the STS-129 commander.

"I've got at least one that can still be stuck," radioed the Expedition 22 commander.

As they forgot to apply the mission insignia decals, it may also mean that this the only station-visiting shuttle crew not to sign the walls of the outpost.

Any word if they stuck a patch in the Quest airlock like the other EVA crews did?

The two unknowns: Andromede and Neemo.

There were more stickers:

  • Same row as 126: STS-119, Space Vehicle Mockup Facility.
  • Next row: From ideas to reality (Simonyi), The eternal feminine draws us upward (Simonyi), STS-127, STS-128.

On the Unity module's new patch panel, the STS-88 crew is represented with their official NASA emblem. However, NASA photo sts092-372-035 clearly shows the STS-88 crew represented by the Dog Crew III patch in the FGB module.

Are there really two different locations for mission emblems or have they been consolidated into one?

What happened to the Dog Crew III emblem?

And lastly, why the switch from cloth patches to decals?

Thanks Erik, I was using an older NASA photo to identify the emblems and forgot that there were decals added after the photo was taken.

To that end, here a shot of the same "heritage" patch panel from STS-128, nicely illustrating how they had run out room for more emblems.

There are multiple decal collections aboard the space station. In addition to the Unity panel being discussed here, as Tim points out, there is also one inside the Quest airlock, and in the entrance way to the Kibo lab.

Those two (Quest, Kibo) are also traditionally adorned with the crew's signatures around their decal.

There is a separate panel inside Unity for the Expedition decals and there is a cloth patch collection inside Zarya.

There is also a tradition of displaying the current Expedition patch above the hatch in Destiny (the changing of the patch has become part of the change-of-command ceremony).

Based on the conversation between Hobaugh and Williams after undocking, and the lack of any imagery, it sounds as though the STS-129 crew forgot to add their emblem decals to any of the station's collections and that Williams had at "at least one" decal he could add. I am sure the oversight will be corrected by a future visiting crew.

And while on the subject of inadvertent errors, it has been pointed out that the new panel's STS-117 decal appears to be missing the tab for Anderson.

I'm sure once Clay gets up there on 131, he will probably correct that oversight himself if he has a marker handy.

Does anyone know what the fate of the "heritage" panel will be? I hope that it goes on display at National Air and Space Museum or somewhere we can visit it.

And so it was: before STS-130 commander George Zamka (pictured) applied his crew's patch, Expedition 22 commander Jeff Williams affixed a decal for STS-129 (presumably delivered by Endeavour).

I just came across this and do not know of the original post's content... However, this panel came down because we replaced it with multiple panels as a part of the Node 1 Modifications to support the new orientation of Node 3. It had nothing to do with running out of room.
