I have a collection of every STS mission decal. Is this somewhat rare?

Even if it is, does it matter? Meaning is it only valuable to me?

As a friend reminds me, something is only as valuable as what someone is willing to pay for it. If people can buy all of them relatively easily - they still will pay whatever is charged $1-$3.

Taking the time to put them all together in one collection is another value.

I don't know that I would call such a collection valuable just in the monetary sense. It's nice to have basically original design artwork before it gets translated into embroidery though.

That is the catch. The decals are only produced once. Try finding a decal for a mission more than 5 years ago.

Not necessarily. I've seen sheets of space shuttle mission decals (along with Apollo and Skylab) for sale. They come up time and again.

On edit: A quick Internet look finds a British company selling an STS-6 sticker for one pound, which is about a $1.50.

Decals for canceled shuttle missions - such as Brandenstein's 51D, and the Baudry only 51E - are a little harder to find, although they do surface occasionally. Those I would place a bit more premium on. But then again, only those who are looking for those kinds of things would pay a little more for them.

These aren't "sheet" of decals type, but individual and passed out for MFA. As I said, they aren't reissued.

Hart, we are selling the STS-6 and other decals. The STS-6 are from the personal collection of Paul Weitz. I would guess trying to obtain one for every flight now would be time consuming, but not impossible.

Can you share how one might distinguish an MFA STS-1 decal? Is there any writing on the back as more modern SFA decals have?

Complete decal sets of all flown shuttle flights is possible to assemble, though probably not too common, but it actually depends on what decal types you're referring to.

Decal sheets from Apollo to shuttle were produced, and still are, from a graphics arts company since the late 1970s that started in California.

Individual cut-stickers of each shuttle mission patch design would be harder to complete in a set, but certainly not impossible.

My firm can actually offer a set of all 130 missions to date, if anyone is interested, of the original NASA-issued productions, SFA versions included, that are not printed in decal sheets, but rather as individual stickers.

In answer to Robert's question about STS-1, overall, there were at least 3-4 different types of emblem stickers produced for the maiden flight of Columbia in 1981. One came from Rockwell, another from a private source with not the best printed quality, while the majority of STS-1 stickers were printed under a NASA contract, which my company is also a part of.

Decals with the first wording on back were done for STS-32 in 1990 and with the first SFA logo on back, for STS-91, in 1998.

Not affiliated with them, but Mr. Tom's Alley has decals for STS-51A, as well as most of the missions beginning with STS-35.

eBay 360244319434 is what I was thinking of when I was referring to sheets of STS decals, from STS-1 to at least STS-29, were available.

Thumbs up to decals! Their span of coverage of flight and spaceflight is huge.

All times are CT (US)
