New 'Space Fan' LEGO minifigure sports her own NASA model rocket

Ever since LEGO released spacesuit-clad minifigures in 1978, many of the building brick toy's loyal fans have been space fans and many space fans have become LEGO fans. Now, the two fandoms have been captured in one new minifigure.

The "Space Fan" is one of 16 limited edition characters being released on Sunday (April 19) as part of the 20th series of LEGO Collectible Minifigures.

Two things I noticed on this right away:

First, if you go and look at the group photo of the other figures in the series, The Space fan is actually wearing goggles.

Second, I find it odd that any kind of first space fan figure would be female. Naturally, lots of females are into the space program, but I think it's a given that the majority are probably males.

Like many recent minifigures, the Space Fan has two faces; turn the head to one side for the face without eyewear (as pictured above) and turn the head to the other for goggles. The hair piece hides the opposite face when not turned forward.

Whether or not it is a given, it is an incorrect stereotype that has been reflected in toys and by pop culture. Perhaps this minifigure is one small step towards righting that impression.
