Are there any plans to include anything from Apollo 17 with the STS-134/5 payload? You know the last shuttle mission carrying something from the last Apollo mission? |

That's a very good idea. I wonder if they will run with it? |

I understand why Fezman asked and JL's response. There really isn't any relationship between Apollo and Shuttle.I think it would be more appropriate if the last shuttle flight carried something from STS-1 and also MR-3 Freedom 7 to mark it's 50th anniversary. |

Tim... now that seems more appropriate. I like it. |

How about the American Flag flown on Freedom 7? |

Because they both represent "the end of an era".Three years later, 1975, was the ASTP mission followed by a six year hiatus for US manned spaceflight. Guessing it could be another long drought before NASA sends a manned rocket into space? |

At least with the ending of Apollo with the ASTP, we had a plan in place and it was being worked. Now with the shuttle ending, we have no plan. Its almost like running into war with no idea on what to do after you topple the current gov't. If we are hoping for the commercialization of space in the near future, we are in deep trouble. |

The MR-3/Freedom 7 flown U.S. flag was flown again aboard STS-71/Atlantis in 1995 to commemorate NASA's 100th human spaceflight. The large American flag is permanently on public display inside the lobby of the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville, FL, as it was presented there by Alan Shepard and Hoot Gibson. |

I would like to see a piece of Columbia and a piece of Challenger flown aboard STS-135, so something from those two pioneering orbiters gets one more chance to fly in space. That might be hard if all (or most) of Challenger is buried in a silo. But at least flying a piece of Columbia should be a real possibility. |

Would it lessen the impact if the pieces from Columbia and Challenger were from before the tragedy?(In one sense, Atlantis is already flying with a very large piece of Challenger. OV-099 donated its body flap to Atlantis for its maiden flight and its been flying with OV-104 ever since...) |

Not necessarily so. But I think it would be poignant if a piece of those orbiters that flew on those fateful missions could somehow complete their journey with STS-135. |

So whose body flap was Challenger flying with on 61-A? Any reason why Atlantis got Challenger's body flap? |

I still think they should give John Young a seat and bring him up for the ride.
