Abdul Ahad Momand, the first, and currently only, Afghan citizen to journey to outer space, died on 21 June 2026. RIP. |

Momand's death on Sunday (June 21) was due to cancer, according to his family. He died in a hospital in Stuttgart, Germany, near where he had lived for more than half his life.  |

This is most unexpected and sad news of Abdul Ahad. I met him back in September 1994 in Stuttgart, when he first fled Afghanistan and the Taliban. He and his young family had very little and he was initially worried about about his safety. I brought a few photos and souvenirs from his mission for him and the next time I visited him he had framed one of the photos to display in his apartment.I was glad to learn that he built a new life for himself and his family and that he was even able to visit Afghanistan again. Condolences to his family at this difficult time. |

I had the privilege of meeting him twice in Germany. The first occasion was in 2009, when we invited him to a stamp exhibition, where he participated in what was likely one of his very few public autograph signings. The second time was years later at the Technic Museum in Speyer, where we met in a more private setting.On both occasions, he was remarkably warm, approachable, and down to earth. Despite the passage of many years, he remained mindful of his personal safety and continued to keep much of his life in Germany out of the public eye. One particularly memorable moment was at the stamp show, when he showed me the Quran that had been read in space—the first of its kind. It was a fascinating and humbling experience that I will never forget. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy and will always hold a special place in my memories as the very first astronaut I had the honor of hosting as a guest. |
