The Six: The Untold Story of America's First Women in Space by Loren Grush A fascinating and moving history of the first six women astronauts at NASA.The Six was an extraordinary cohort of women recruited by NASA in the seventies. Greeted in Houston by make-up bags designed for use in space, no designated locker rooms and flight suits that didn't fit, they went on to break barriers on earth and in space. This sparkling history reveals their journey through NASA's outreach program, rigorous tests and training, sexism, press attention, and the solidarity with which they overcame obstacles and launched into space. - Hardcover, 416 pages

collectSPACE 'The Six' author Loren Grush: First female astronauts set example for picking woman to land on moonForty-five years after selecting its first six women to fly into space, NASA has 16 active female astronauts who are eligible to become the first woman to walk on the moon. For Loren Grush, the best thing about this new group of trailblazers, is that like the original six, they neither have nor need "the right stuff" — at least as the term was applied to their male counterparts from 60 years ago. |

"The Six" is developed into a feature film by Universal Pictures. Lord Miller, the production company led by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is producing with Rachel Lee Goldenberg as director and co-writer with Bill Parker. From Variety: Tam O'Shaughnessy, [Sally] Ride's longtime partner, is consulting on the project. "When I read 'The Six,' I couldn't put it down," O'Shaughnessy said in a statement. "It's such a vivid portrait of America's first six female astronauts — their challenges, friendships, competitiveness, training, love lives, sorrows and joys. I knew it would make a great movie." She continued: "When I met Rachel, Bill and the teams at Universal Pictures and Lord Miller, I knew they were the perfect people to tell this important story. The real story of those extraordinary women including my late partner, Sally Ride — the first American woman to go to space." | |
