Gemini 5: Eight Days in Space or Bust by David J. Shayler This third book of the Gemini mission series focuses on the flight that simulated in Earth orbit the duration of an eight-day Apollo mission to the Moon. After the proof-of-concept test flights Gemini 1, 2 and 3 (as described in Gemini Flies!) and the success of the first American EVA as well as the four-day U.S. mission (Gemini 4), NASA gained the confidence to gradually increase mission time spent in orbit. This is the first known book to focus solely on the Gemini 5 mission and its challenges with equipment failures and difficult living conditions. The mission was targeted to double the endurance of the previous one, and as such was an integral stepping stone for an even more audacious mission four months later. Attempting the eight- and then fourteen-day durations would be an opportunity for America to gain the lead in space exploration over the Soviets. This mission pioneered the duration of a flight to the Moon and back three years before Apollo 8 made that journey, without a lunar landing, for the first time. - Paperback, 456 pages

Curious to see if the five wristwatches worn by Cooper and Conrad on Gemini V will be discussed (among which the first automatic wristwatch in space: Conrad's personal Glycine Airman automatic pilot watch, which was also used and exposed to outer space on Gemini XI). |

It is indeed rewarding to finally see the Gemini 5 book in print. |

A very elaborate book with lots of unseen information in other non-NASA books! Detailed experiments list, plus mission timeline.Unfortunately, this book is printed on a smaller format than all the other books in the series, and no longer using high quality glossy paper. Also only a minor mention of the rich wristwatch wise history of this flight as five watches were worn on Gemini V, among which the first automatic wristwatch in space. (page 262) |

Very interesting post above. My copy is on highly glossed cover and paper with the usual fonts. I assume that there are different manfacturers? Highly recommended. |

So US-versions are printed on glossy paper? |

The European version is published by Springer Nature Switzerland AG as stated in the opening pages, and one may think that glossy paper is less environmentally friendly than lighter paper hence the Springer Nature Switzerland imprint (just a guess, here). I would be curious to see what's written inside the US edition, assuming it's different. |

Although I am in the states and I bought my copy from Amazon.com it says printed by Springer Praxis Chichester UK on the inside front pages. And when I say GLOSSY I mean GLOSSY both cover and all the pages. Have not seen many of the Springer Space books published like this one. Can recall only the Japanese missions to the ISS book that used this quality.

Has anyone bought a copy within the UK? |

Just finished reading this. As with his previous books, Dave Shayler has written the definitive book on Gemini 5. Although this account of the '8 days or bust' mission is very detailed, it is still very pleasant reading. A lot of information about experiments and procedures is presented is separate boxes, so it doesn't take the reader's attention away from the main story. Well done Dave and looking forward to the next books in the series. |

I bought it in UK. It has glossy covers and paper, and it says "Printed by Printforce, United Kingdom" on the last page. |

I'm just about to find out. I've bought all three in the series off Amazon (UK), all Springer Praxis 1st Editions. The Gemini V book has arrived before the other two. It is glossy throughout. (On the bottom of the back page just inside the cover: "Printed by Printforce, the Netherlands). |

The first two in the series arrived today. They are ordinary paper, not glossy (with glossy paperback covers), and are a slightly larger format than the Gemini V book. On the back page is "Printed in Great Britain by Amazon".Quite clearly, despite Amazon wishing me to believe so, not a First Edition. |

Ordering from the U.S. is there a difference in the book quality ordering from Amazon vs. directly from Springer Praxis, or impossible to know what you might receive? |

I think the basic answer is it is impossible to know what you might receive. However, there are two caveats. The first is that the ordinary paper 'edition' isn't necessarily inferior — it is slightly larger in dimensions but the paper has less weight. Secondly — I think that because the Gemini V book has only recently been released you are much more likely to receive the glossy pages edition anyway. |
