Unfortunately, I have to agree, however I'm still VERY grateful for Mark Gray producing those terrific DVD sets twenty years ago. I wonder if those old tapes were processed by Peter Jackson's supercomputers what would happen? What Jackson accomplished with the "They Shall Not Grow Old" and The Beatles "Get Back" documentaries was nothing short of astounding. |

While very instinct, that picture certainly shows Eagle on the Moon, with the U.S. flag right of centre. |

The actual picture on the tape is probably much better. The poor quality is because these Type A NTSC tapes were played back in a Type C PAL tape, just to verify what was on them. |

So where does that leave you? The tapes are NTSC and there is definitely vintage Apollo on them. What now? |

Probably send them to DCVideo in the US and have them transferred for 300 USD per tape. They have transferred NASA video tapes before, including the 2" quadruplex tapes that sold for a mil some time ago. |

I don’t have much to my name but if you started a Kickstarter campaign or similar, I’d contribute. |

This is a great bit of news. Yes happy also to contribute, via Kickstarter, etc. A cousin of mine who is also very interested in this thread and an expert recommends this guy in Holland who might be able to do it also. |

As much as I understand the allure, is there any reason to think the end product will be any different than what is already available? Is anyone suggesting such? |

I’d say the physical condition of the tapes should be assessed by a conservator to determine if they are physically sound or need cleaning before transfer. You might want to consider this before putting them in a mechanical deck before they have been wound and inspected by hand somehow.I would try the BBC tech dept as mentioned further up this thread. Never hurts to ask. Would love to do a short written article on this someday! |

It is pretty certain now these do not contain BBC footage.Thankfully the tapes do play very nicely, no oxide shedding. From what I have been able to determine from the first few minutes there is NBC footage on them, and maybe some ABC or a direct NASA feed. NBC footage is all there from quad masters. ABC footage is not all there, neither is all the mission control footage. The tapes could possibly contain lost footage of that, and maybe other channels too. I will be making a video detailing everything, and possible ways to support the project if people want to. |

There might be some network coverage that we've never seen before. Again, the real Apollo 11 "holy grail", the slow-scan data tapes were determined to be erased sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's. |

Unfortunately DCVideo will not be able to digitize my tapes without written permission from the networks that may be on the tapes. From the sound I can ID Walter Cronkite, CBS. But it is possible channels were switched between tapes or even in a single tape.Chicken and egg problem, how will I be able to ID the networks without having footage to preview? So I will have to look elsewhere for transfers. I know the wait has been very long, so here is a Google Drive link that has some minutes of the landing and second EVA tape that I played briefly on a type C machine. |

Talking with two companies, one in the Netherlands to hopefully play back more of the tapes on a proper type A machine to I.D more of the footage.Another company in the USA that would be able to digitize the tapes completely. Exciting. It would be nice to get some lost news network footage although it wouldn't be historic. Thoughts on whether the respective broadcast networks would allow me to post these tapes on YouTube? |
