Amazon, Amblin documentary 'Good Night Oppy' to tell Mars rover's story

As NASA moves forward with its latest rover on Mars, a new film is looking back at the agency's past "opportunity" to explore the Red Planet.

"Good Night Oppy," an upcoming feature-length documentary produced by Amazon Studios, Film 45, Amblin Television and Tripod Media, will tell the story of Opportunity, one of NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers, and the connection that grew between the robotic explorer and the people who built and ran it. Ryan White ("The Case Against 8," "Assassins") is directing the film, now in production.

Amblin Entertainment and Amazon Studios have debuted the trailer for "Good Night Oppy," director Ryan White's upcoming documentary about Opportunity, a six-wheeled NASA rover that was built to survive three months on the Red Planet but exceeded all expectations by its longevity. Narrated by Angela Bassett, the feature-length film opens in select theaters Nov. 4 and streams on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 23.

'Good Night Oppy' explores human side of robotic rover's life on Mars

Ryan White did not set out to make a tearjerker.

Yet audiences watching the director's new documentary, "Good Night Oppy," now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, may want to have tissues ready.

"Not a chance in hell did I think this would be as emotional as the final film is," White said in an interview with collectSPACE.
