After 'Apollo 11': New short film goes into 'Quarantine' after first moon landing

Long before millions of people from around the globe isolated themselves to protect against a pandemic, three astronauts spent 21 days secluded from the rest of the world after being exposed to the moon.

"Apollo 11: Quarantine," a new short film from the team behind the feature-length documentary "Apollo 11," tells the lesser-known story that followed the historic first moon landing. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins entered quarantine to protect the rest of humanity from any possible "moon germs" and to preserve the moon rocks they returned with them from being contaminated by life on Earth.

Todd Douglas Miller's 'Apollo 11: Quarantine' to Premiere for Television Saturday, March 6th

CNN Films today announced the television premiere of "Apollo 11: Quarantine," a new short film from award-winning director and producer Todd Douglas Miller ("Apollo 11," "Dinosaur 13"), for Saturday, March 6 at 9:00pm Eastern on CNN. Miller previously created the 2019 cinematic event documentary feature, "Apollo 11," which was honored with three Emmy® Awards and was the highest-grossing documentary film of that year.

The all-archival "Apollo 11: Quarantine" is created primarily from previously unseen, pristine 70mm footage from the National Archives and NASA, the same source material used for "Apollo 11." The crisp images of "Apollo 11: Quarantine" begins with the return of mission astronauts Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins, who were medically-quarantined following their return to Earth in the summer of 1969.

Although largely unknown to the general public, these extraordinary measures were taken to protect the world from any contamination with microorganisms or other material the astronauts may have inadvertently transported from the Moon. The film shows that, as the world feted their extraordinary achievement, their families waved at them through the windows of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory (LRL) in Houston. Out of an abundance of caution, the astronauts were confined to the module for 21 days from their initial exposure to the lunar surface.

Miller's film, produced and directed during a semi-quarantine of a different era, is intended to offer encouragement for viewers. The crew's inspiring mission was not completed until the end of their three-week medical quarantine. Their personal sacrifice offers viewers a reminder of the human capacity for resilience at the current moment of national crisis.

Miller produced "Apollo 11: Quarantine" with Laura Kirby-Miller, Thomas Baxley Petersen, and Evan Krauss. The film is executive produced by Amy Entelis and Courtney Sexton for CNN Films; Josh Braun for Submarine; and Tom Quinn for NEON. NEON released the film in IMAX theaters in last month.

During the March 6 television premiere, "Apollo 11: Quarantine" will stream live for subscribers via CNNgo (CNN.com/go and via CNNgo apps for Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, Samsung Smart TV, and Android TV) and on the CNN mobile apps for iOS and Android. For a limited period beginning Sunday, March 7, the film will be available on demand for cable and satellite system subscribers and via CNNgo platforms and CNN mobile apps.

For the 2019 documentary, CNN Films produced a companion podcast, Apollo 11: Beyond the Moon, which remains available for users interested in more information about the mission. In 1969, the WWII aircraft carrier USS Hornet CVS-12 was a key contributor to the epic US Apollo lunar landing program, the greatest scientific achievement in the history of mankind. Hornet flawlessly recovered the astronauts, spacecraft, and moon rocks of Apollo 11, the first humans to walk on the moon.

To protect President Nixon (who was aboard) and all other humans from a possible “moon germ” pandemic, Hornet executed a quarantine program prescribed by NASA. It included special biological isolation garments (BIGs) and a Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) made by Airstream.

The activities of that amazing event are highlighted by the 2021 NEON/CNN short documentary film, "Apollo 11: Quarantine."
