I note that there is a new DVD available called "The Apollo Chronicles" directed by Liz Reph. Has anyone watched this yet, and is it any good? July 20th, 1969 marks one of the greatest achievements in human history — man's first step on the Moon. Watched on live television by more than 1 billion people around the globe, Apollo 11 mesmerized the world, leaving a lasting impression on those who witnessed it. But behind this seminal event is a monumental story filled with incredible drama, danger, ingenuity, and emotion. The Apollo Chronicles tells this story like it has never been told before. Participants, family members, historians, and other experts paint a rich portrait of one of the most fascinating achievements in history. This definitive 4-part documentary provides a full, nuanced understanding of this richly complex tale. In the end, The Apollo Chronicles is far more than a science story... rather, it is a story about the people, the events, and the obstacles that comprised one of humanities' greatest triumphs. |

I watched it when it first aired in July as a four part series and I enjoyed it. Thanks for your post, I was unaware that the DVD was released. I'll definitely have to grab a copy. |

I've just watched the Apollo Chronicles and can recommend a viewing. Excellent at placing events into the context of the time with plenty of rare footage and interviews. Quite possibly the last time Alan Bean was interviewed before his passing. |

I've now had the opportunity to watch all of this documentary. It takes a somewhat similar approach to "Chasing the Moon" in that it concentrates more on the background "eyewitness" human stories. It touches briefly on the world events and political climate of the era from early beginnings and leads up to the Apollo 11 moon landing. The narration is primarily that of "talking heads" (contractors, astronauts, former NASA employees, space writers, space historians etc. etc.).The overwhelming feeling that comes out of this documentary is that of pride and patriotism in a job well done. Even if you already have "Chasing the Moon," it's worth buying this disc as well (and the footage is excellent, especially of space vehicle construction, which I'd never seen before). | |
