I vaguely remember in an auction (possibly Goldberg's or Regency around 2010 to 2013) that an alternative cover for the Apollo 8 issue of TIME magazine was sold (circa $100k). This covered the scenario where the crew did not return and the magazine would have published this version.
I can't find anything on a search, hence this post. All help appreciated.
Art (11x15) This copper (?) printing plate (for the January 6, 1969 edition) was prepared for use as an alternate cover in case the flight was unsuccessful. It has to be remembered that this flight was the first to go to the moon (a last minute decision by NASA) and the magazine was prepared to use this cover in case the flight didn't return. The cover design is similar (but different) from the issued cover and features larger pictures of the three astronauts as well as an "APOLLO TRAGEDY" diagonal banner at the top of the cover. The issued cover has the pictures of the astronauts at the bottom with the moon in the background and "APOLLO TRIUMPH" across the top. There are the usual rubs and dings on the printing plate as might be expected, but the plate is indicative of a tense time in the American space program. Undoubtedly unique and historic.

Interesting photo but original post mentioned Time magazine and not Newsweek so wondering if another cover is also out there or just some confusion between the two magazines?

Confusion is all my fault. I couldn't remember which magazine it was. Interesting if any other periodicals and newspapers had prepared contingencies.
Nixon had a speech in the event of moon disaster. Anyone know of any others? Thanks.
