5ème Nord Kourou
by Karol Barthelemy
In 1968 took off the first sounding rocket Veronique from the Kourou space base, 50 years later is the turn of the last generation of the famous Ariane rockets, the 6th. of the name, to take off. Between these two dates is the whole European space history that is written with its tremendous technological and commercial success. The Kourou Space Center has been the launching pad for hundreds of observation and communication satellites for customers around the world, bringing Europe to the forefront of commercial launches.

The book will invite us to a surprising journey to discover this European spaceport by opening the backstage of a launch, from the construction of launchers to takeoff. It will also help us discover the origins, the specificities of this great project born of a French ambition and carried by a European mobilization and a continuous implication of space actors, the public authorities and the local authorities of Guyana, raising also all the stakes related to the insertion of such an installation in Guyanese soil.

At the heart of the Amazon, the futuristic base of Kourou is a gateway to this strategic space where Europe has more than ever to fight for its competitiveness and independence.
