Most of us are familiar with the large voluminous softcover "WestPac Safari USS Kearsarge CVS-33 Project Mercury Far East Cruise 1963" on the recovery of Mercury Faith 7 Gordon Cooper. However during the Apollo days, these Navy cruise books came in well-illustrated hardcover editions. Can we make up a complete listing of these books?

I believe there's a book for Apollo 8 and 11... otherwise not sure on other books, besides:

  • Apollo 15 Moon Book USS Okinawa LPH-3
  • T- T+ Tico 14 Crew's Book Apollo 16 recovery
  • USS Ticonderoga Primary Recovery Ship Apollo 17
Also: US Navy Cruise Books

There's a little cruise book for USS Yorktown that covers several events in the late 1968/early 1969 period that happened in quick succession, including Apollo 8. It was a little low-budget comb-bound volume, but was a nice little souvenir of a very eventful period in the ship's life.

There was a very nice cruise book produced commemorating USS Hornet's Apollo 11 recovery deployment. It's beautifully done (some of the photos are just gorgeous) and is highly sought-after.

I also know of the Apollo 14 cruise book produced for the crew of USS New Orleans. I examined one several years ago and wish I'd thought to make photocopies or scan it when I had the opportunity.

All times are CT (US)
