Inspired by the concurrent thread about Gemini related fiction, I'd like to pose the same challenge in relation to female astronauts and cosmonauts. To set some parameters, can I suggest this is limited to the pre-space shuttle era, thus spanning roughly the period 1960 to 1980, and in a space programme that broadly reflects reality. I am already aware of the "Fictional Astronauts" Wikipedia page, and indeed have contributed quite a few additions to it, but with my own searches now yielding less and less positive results, it is time to throw this challenge out to the cS community. Thanks in anticipation of an avalanche of responses! |

A good example would be VOYAGE (to Mars) by Stephen Baxter. |

Yes, that is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind, although it is quite well known. Baxter's TITAN also includes a female taikonaut making China's first 'manned' spaceflight, in a craft which more or less exactly anticipated the Shenzhou programme, although being set in 2004, it is strictly speaking outside my parameters. | |
