Moonwatch Only: The Ultimate Omega Speedmaster Guide
by Grégoire Rossier and Anthony Marquié
"It makes perfect sense to publish a book called Moonwatch Only. The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional — the Moonwatch — has done things that no other timepiece has done and it's been worn in places where only a few human beings have been." — Captain Eugene Cernan, the last man on the Moon

Initially designed for automobile racing teams and engineers, the Omega Speedmaster embarked on a very different trajectory when NASA chose it to accompany astronauts heading for the moon in 1965. Its involvement in the space adventure has propelled the Moonwatch to the top of the list of celebrated timepieces.

After years of research and observation, the authors present a complete panorama of the Moonwatch in a systematic work that is both technical and attractive, making it the essential reference book for this legendary watch.

"It is an indescribable reference work and a true must-have for every Speedmaster collector." — Forbes

"This book sets a new standard. Not only for books on the Omega Speedmaster, but for watch books in general. I've never seen anything like it, and believe me I could fill an impressive sized wall with books on watches. Authors of other books or publishers should take a look at Moonwatch Only as well to see how it should be done." — Fratello Watches

496 pages? $350? Does a watch come with it?

Would like to know more about this if anyone has any insight.

It's not inexpensive but worth every penny if you are a fan or collector of the Speedmaster.

If you search Moonwatch Only book and look at the reviews from hard core Speedmaster fans you will find that this reference book is invaluable and $350 is a small investment to make before you pull the trigger on a collectors grade vintage Speedmaster.

The information is thuroughly researched and the illustrations and images are truly fantastic.

The book was worth every cent I payed before I bought my first used Speedmaster Moonwatch. With the detailed information in this book I was able to decide, which Speedmaster model I wanted to buy and which differences in details during the years occurred. With its help I could exactly define the production period of the watch.

Every detail of the Speedmaster Moonwatch is documented and also the specific changes dependent to the production period. It is a real treasure.

My only wish with this book were that it included more on the NASA history. As it stands, this book is a great technical history and guide to the watch itself, and it's mechanicals and many iterations.

I think the book would benefit greatly with more of the NASA history of the watch, as that is what really makes it desirable to many. An enthusiastic author should see if Jim Ragan would be willing to collaborate on a NASA Speedmaster history.

From the author:
We also wanted to highlight the close tie between the Speedmaster and NASA. To achieve this, we invited the two most qualified people to write the "Speedmaster and NASA" and "The Alaska Project" chapters:
  • Petros Protopapas, International Brand Heritage Manager OMEGA

  • Jim Ragan, retired Project Engineer and Program Manager at NASA, notably responsible for the selection and testing of astronaut equipment between 1964 and 1999, therefore including the Speedmaster.

Curious to see if this time we'll learn how much Speedmaster chronographs were exactly delivered to NASA in 1965, 1968, 1978 and 1990...

The 10 page "Speedmaster and NASA" chapter has seven pages of text but space aficionados won't get any wiser as it remains a general overview focusing on the fact that the Speedmaster chronographs were basically off the shelf 321 movements. A single photo was new to me, showing Ron Evans' personal Speedmaster.

A great updated book but a missed chance to bring the Speedmaster spaceflight saga as it really unfolded, perhaps the authors will grab a second chance to do so in a 2019 edition, celebrating 50 years Apollo 11?

Here a nice free download on the Omega Speedmaster commemorative Apollo versions.

Certainly a very interesting teaser for the 3rd edition of the "Moonwatch Only" book due by December 2019!

Since you already have a copy, regarding NASA and the Speedy history with spaceflight, any major improvements?

This 3rd edition book has been updated and has a special chapter on "Astronauts and their Speedmasters" which includes great photos and research on both NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts usage!

Has anyone in the USA received their copy of Moonwatch Only?

According to Belgian Post, mine was shipped on Nov. 13th and arrived in the US on Dec. 3, but USPS tracking still shows "Label Created, not yet in system," meaning that USPS has not scanned it yet.

I have received and reviewed the Moonwatch Only 3rd edition. It has more information on astronauts and cosmonauts' use of the Speedmaster in space.

It has a section on the Alaska III radial Speedmaster provided to the first shuttle crews in the 1980s. It also has information on the latest special edition releases.

It is worthwhile for any owner or potential owner of a Speedmaster. It shows what to look for in any version of the Speedmaster that you look to own. It helps prevent you from buying a fake or "Frankenstein" Speedmaster.

Get your copy while you can as the authors are working on a "Seamaster Only" book and we won't see another version before 50 years ASTP! Ideal gift under Christmas tree...
