Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced good book on the history of Russian spaceflight please?

I would recommend anything written by Asif Siddiqi. His history on the Soviet space programme, which covers the period up to the early 1970s, is quite simply the best. It was originally released as one very large book but was later issued as a two volume set.

I have the two volume set and they are titled:

  1. Sputnik and the Soviet Space Challenge
  2. The Soviet Space Race with Apollo
The one volume book was called "Challenge to Apollo: The Soviet Union and the Space Race 1945-1974."

Wikipedia says that the book, "is widely considered to be the best English language history of the Soviet space programme in print." I fully agree.

I have recently acquired Asif's "The Red Rockets Glare: Spaceflight and the Soviet Imagination 1857-1957" (a Christmas present). I have only managed to read a few pages due to other calls on my time but this is also looking like an excellent work.

I cannot immediately come up with a single work that covers the more modern era. Springer Praxis produces a lot of space exploration books but they tend to be on specific areas.

This is a NASA Special Publications (SP-2000-4408) and is available for free download from NASA's History Office website.

It was also available for free as a hardback in the Information Office at NASA HQ the last time I was there in the fall.

I'll be heading down there in April, I'll have to see if I can grab a copy when I'm there. I would love to give this a read, just not on my computer screen (with the PDF).
