Early notice that Bert Vis and I are now contracted to write a book on the manned Interkosmos program for Springer Books, New York. All going well, the book should be published sometime around mid-2015. Hopefully it's a book a few people having been waiting to see published. We have already gained some terrific insights into the whole program, and Bert will be contributing several interviews he and Rex Hall conducted with the Interkosmonauts or their Soviet crew members over recent years. |

Colin, will you be going into any detail regarding the reception and further careers of the Interkosmos members? For example, Muhammed Faris was not "just" a Syrian air force colonel when he joined the Syrian rebels in 2012. |

Robert, the one thing I love doing in preparing my books is to thoroughly research the lives of the subjects, which includes chronicling their later lives and careers, so take it from me that each of the Interkosmos guest researchers will have their full stories told. I also hope to include recent photos of them all where I can. |

Looking forward to this very interesting book, Colin. Actually, my interest with the Russian space programme started with the Intercosmos flights, so I am very keen to know more about it.(If you need help with the Germans [Jähn, Köllner, and the backup backups], just let me know.) |

Bert Vis and I are just completing the manuscript for this book, and will be submitting it for editing in 3-4 weeks. If all goes according to plan, it should be released by Springer-Praxis sometime around September. |

I'm pleased to announce that this book has undergone the editing process and is now back in the hands of Springer Books. They will send it out for production and printing - a process that will likely take a couple of months. So I'd envisage (barring any technical problems) that it will be available sometime around October. |

Interkosmos: The Eastern Bloc's Early Space Program by Colin Burgess and Bert Vis This book focuses on the Interkosmos program, which was formed in 1967, marking a fundamentally new era of cooperation by socialist countries, led by the Soviet Union, in the study and exploration of space. The chapters shed light on the space program that was at that time a prime outlet for the Soviet Union's aims at becoming a world power.Interkosmos was a highly publicized Russian space program that rapidly became a significant propaganda tool for the Soviet Union in the waning years of communism. Billed as an international "research-cosmonaut" imperative, it was also a high-profile means of displaying solidarity with the nine participating Eastern bloc countries. Those countries contributed pilots who were trained in Moscow for week-long "guest" missions on orbiting Salyut stations. They did a little subsidiary science and were permitted only the most basic mechanical maneuvers. In this enthralling new book, and following extensive international research, the authors fully explore the background, accomplishments and political legacy of the Interkosmos program. Through personal and often highly revealing interviews with many of the participants they relate the very human story behind this extraordinary but controversial space venture. - Softcover

At this stage it looks as if the Interkosmos book will likely be released in November as planned. It really is a spectacular looking book, judging by the cover art and a vast number of colour photographs within, many of which have never been seen before. |

Due to delays in layout, production is running late but the package will be signed off this weekend and then be sent for printing. With luck, copies might appear before Christmas.

It might be a bit of a squeeze, but if all goes as planned in printing the book it may well be released about then. For the space philatelists out, Jim Reichman wrote a special illustrated chapter for this book, backgrounding the history of space stamps and covers associated with the Interkosmos program. |

But don't despair - there are still well over 300 black and white and full colour photos in the book, many of which have never been seen before. |
