I'm relatively new and still learning, this whole arena. I was wondering if there was anyone who had published a fairly comprehensive early history of NASA (pre-shuttle program) documenting each mission.

Not really sure if anyone has put something out there like this or would be interested. Considered starting writing my own book using mission reports, talking to experts, etc., but didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of good books out there. One of the most informative is "Apollo: The Race To The Moon" by Murray and Cox, which goes into some detail about the "early" NASA years.

"A Man On The Moon" by Andrew Chaikin is good and perhaps more mission-specific, especially about Apollo.

The Outward Odyssey series is a work-in-progress and is turning into quite a comprehensive overview of our entire space program. Most of the series authors are readers of and contributors to collectSPACE.

If you seek information, cS is the best place to be!

David Baker's "History of Manned Spaceflight" offers a more than thorough account of the M-G-A programs.

In addition to the (excellent) books already referenced, the NASA History Publications homepage offers free downloadable e-book versions of most official project histories and historical studies produced by the Agency.

I can't think of a comprehensive volume I'd recommend above all others; there's just too much information and too many diverse perspectives available.
